VergeIO gets vote of confidence
Ex-VMware exec Zia Yusuf has invested in VergeIO and joined its board advise on go-to-market and partner ecosystem strategy.
VergeIO is a converged - it says ultraconverged - alternative to VMware’s vSphere, vSAN and NSX products providing a private cloud. It says it competes against VMware, obviously, Nutanix, Proxmox and Dell Technologies’ VxRAIL products. The company was started up in 2010 as an HCI (hyper-converged Infrastructure) supplier and then called Yottabyte, referring to the largest named unit of digital storage in the metric system (10²⁴ bytes). It rebranded to VergeIO in the 2017-2018 period, hinting at being on the leading edge of IT with its VergeOS private cloud software.
Yusuf stated: “I spent my career building the partnerships and ecosystems that carry technology to market. The signal I look for is an architecture that gives partners something durable to sell. Customers want more from their infrastructure now.”
They want: “a platform ready for AI and the workloads that follow. One operating system built from a single code base delivers both, and it gives partners a margin structure and a differentiation that a stack of assembled products cannot match. I invested and joined the board to help build the go-to-market motion that matches the technology.”
The amount unvested is not being revealed.
Yusuf was VMware’s SVP for Strategic Ecosystem and Industry Solutions from 2021 to 2024, leaving after it was acquired by Broadcom in November 2023. Following this, he had various voluntary positions to do with exec coaching and strategy consulting, and set up Cafe V Advisors to do similar work. He has also been a part-time Senior Advisor and Exec Coach at Boston Consulting Group from March 2024 onwards.
Before VMware, he was a Senior Partner and Managing Director at Boston Consulting Group for 6 years. He opened the firm’s Silicon Valley office and advised tech companies on competitive strategy, go-to-market, ecosystem and partner strategy. He’d previously spent 7 years at SAP, finishing as EVP Global Ecosystem and Partner Group, leaving in 2009.
Prior to that, he was a President and CEO of Streetline for 4½ years, from 2010 to December 2014, which supplied sensor-enabled real-time systems for smart urban parking systems. It was bought by the Kapsch Group in 2015. He’s also been a consulting associate professor at Stanford from 2007 to 2015.
Yusuf will find ex-VMware colleague and CTO Kit Colbert is also on VergeIO's board, having joined, and invested, in June. There's a pattern here. VergeIO now has two ex-VMWare heavy hitters to go talk to potential partners and board and Cx0-level influencers about why VergeIO and VergeOS is a great destination for VMware switchers.
VergeIO CEO Yann Ness said: “Zia built the partner ecosystem for one of the largest infrastructure companies in the world. He knows what partners need to grow. Their customers are asking them what to run next, and they want infrastructure that does more today and is ready for AI tomorrow. Zia’s decision to invest and join our board tells that community where the market is heading.”
The company introduced VergeIQ large language model (LLM) access to VergeOS users in October last year. With it they can run genAI models in-house and on-premises, keeping their data private.
A VergeCLI tool lets an AI assistant control compute, storage, networking, and data protection via plain-language commands. The idea is that customers can run trad VMs and modern AI workloads (including Kubernetes) on the same unified stack.
