Binance estimates $6.3B impact from security breach, freezes $3B in crypto assets
Binance said a preliminary investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop as the possible entry point for the breach. The exchange has suspended deposits and withdrawals and pledged to cover customer losses.
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has estimated the total impact of a major security incident at around $6.3 billion, with approximately $3 billion worth of affected digital assets frozen on-chain in coordination with blockchain partners.
In an update issued on October 30, 2026, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume said its preliminary investigation suggested that the incident may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker allegedly used the access to enter a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
However, a subsequent investigation uncovered additional points of breach, indicating that the attack was more complex than initially suspected.
"This was a complex attack, and we are doing all we can in coordination with law enforcement to resolve it. We are still gathering the facts, and will share more directly as we have them," the company said in a statement.
Binance CEO Richard Teng, in a separate communication to users, clarified that the attacker had not simply exploited an engineer's permissions and that the incident was not a single "one-click" action. He added that the investigation had not attributed responsibility to any individual.
The exchange said it had found no evidence of any compromise involving wallet private keys. Binance has estimated the total impact at approximately $6.3 billion, of which around $3 billion worth of assets have been frozen on-chain so far in coordination with blockchain partners.
Binance has temporarily suspended withdrawals while undertaking a security revamp of its withdrawal service and related addresses. It has also revoked authorisation for the affected address and engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence firms to trace and recover the funds.
The exchange said deposits remain unaffected and continue to operate normally. It added that outflows had ceased after it paused withdrawals. Binance expects to resume withdrawal services within 45 hours as it completes the security checks and remediation process.
Assuring customers that their assets remain safe, Binance said it would cover all losses arising from the incident through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and the company's own funds.
"We'll share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and every fact is verified," Teng said, adding that the exchange would also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation process was complete.
Binance said its teams were working closely with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to identify those responsible and recover the affected assets. The company has urged users to rely exclusively on its official communication channels for further updates as the investigation progresses.
