CORE A: ADMINISTRATIVE CORE – SUMMARY
The Administrative Core (Core A) is responsible for the administrative, fiscal, organizational and communication
needs of the Dog Aging Project (DAP). During Phase 1 of DAP, Core A led the design and successful launch of
what is now the largest, long-term longitudinal study of aging in a companion animal. Dr. Daniel Promislow serves
as Core A Director and serves as MPI of the overall U19 along with MPI Dr. Kate Creevy of Texas A&M University
(DAP Chief Veterinary Officer, Lead of Participant and Sample Management Core C, and Co-Lead of Physical
and Cognitive Decline in Aging Project 1). Dr. Promislow manages the Tufts University-based administrative
operations team, and Co-Leads Project 3, which focuses on systems biology of aging in dogs. Drs. Promislow
and Creevy are co-founders of DAP and have worked closely together on operational and scientific priorities
since its inception. As Lead of Core A, Dr. Promislow leads the Scientific Priorities Team, which meets biweekly
and advises the MPIs on the full breadth of scientific issues that arise in a complex project such as this. Core A
has also constituted external Scientific and Animal Welfare Advisory Boards. The DAP is designed to collect
data and samples from tens of thousands of dogs throughout the country, and this brings with it enormous
challenges requiring ongoing oversight. To meet these challenges, Core A constituted an Operational Priorities
Team (chaired by MPI Creevy, with co-Chair Promislow), which advises the MPIs on logistics-related issues,
including the systems required for the collection, processing and analysis of biospecimens and diverse data
types. Core A works closely with the other Cores to ensure the integrity of this system. Core A has built a strong
administrative team to facilitate daily operations. I also ensures clear and efficient lines of communication within
and between Core and Project teams, and with outside academic and corporate partners. Core A also works
hard to ensure that all team activities are consistent with the mission and core values of the DAP. Recognizing
the DAP as an engine for innovation, Core A Co-Investigator Dr. Virginia Fajt leads the Ancillary Studies
committee, which supports the development of major ancillary studies. Complementing the statistical expertise
found across the DAP team, Core A Co-Investigator Dr. Katherine Kerr provides team-wide statistical oversight
to ensure that research studies are appropriately designed, and manuscripts meet the highest standards of rigor
and reproducibility. As Director of Core A and MPI of the U19, Dr. Promislow will serve as the NIH primary contact
and oversee all financial interactions and sub-contracts, with additional assistance from Dr. Creevy. All of these
goals are accomplished through the following four Specific Aims: 1) Provide administrative and fiscal oversight;
2) Manage team-wide personnel, communication, and interaction; 3) Carry out scientific oversight for the DAP;
and 4) Manage outreach with the external research community.
