```
Coastal Flood Advisory — Hatteras Island
Severity: Minor. Certainty: Likely.
* WHAT...For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to
8 feet in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, 1 to 2
feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near
shorelines and tidal waterways. For the Beach Hazards Statement,
dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves expected in the
surf zone.
* WHERE...Hatteras Island.
* WHEN...For the High Surf Advisory, until 8 PM EDT Sunday. For
the Coastal Flood Advisory, until 2 PM EDT Wednesday. For the
Beach Hazards Statement, from 8 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday
evening.
* IMPACTS...Ocean overwash impacts will continue through at least
Tuesday, especially around high tide, in areas where dunes have
been compromised. NC-12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe
remains closed. The next high tide is around 700 AM Sunday. Rip
currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into
deeper water. Dangerous shore break can throw a swimmer or
surfer head first into the bottom causing neck and back
injuries.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Tide levels will continue to rise with a
King Tide Cycle in place through the upcoming work-week. The
morning high tide will be the highest of the two daily tides.
King Tides peak Tuesday and Wednesday.
