Nutanix makes trio of agentic AI developments
AI-focused server virtualization supplier Nutanix has partnered three ways to boost its agentic AI relevance, with GPU boss Nvidia, server maker Supermicro, and multi-tenant IaaS supplier Netris.
Nutanix will support Nvidia’s forthcoming Vera CPU with its NKP (Nutanix Kubernetes Platform), develop a jointly-engineered server system with Supermicro to run Nutanix’ agentic AI software, and work with Netris to combine its Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) with Netris’ Network Automation, Abstraction, and Multitenancy (NAAM) platform. This provides multi-tenant AI infrastructure with network automation, hard tenant isolation, and self-service network operations across bare metal and virtualized environments with NCP. So we might see a Supermicro Vera Rubin server running Nutanix software available through Netris neocloud and enterprise customers under an AIaaS deal.
EVP for Nutanix Product Management Thomas Cornely said: “Organizations need more than just advanced infrastructure to move agentic AI into production – we believe they need an AI cloud that simply connects intelligence, agents, enterprise applications, and data across CPUs, GPUs, virtual machines, containers, on-premises environments, and cloud. Through our collaboration with Nvidia, Supermicro, and Netris, we plan to help customers accelerate deployments of agents and AI services on a unified platform with built-in security, performance, and governance.”
Nutanix plans to work towards Day Zero support for Nvidia Vera CPUs, beginning with NKP Bare Metal, to serve highly performance-sensitive AI factory environments, with planned expansion to virtualized Nutanix environments. As enterprises adopt agentic AI at scale, they are anticipated to require infrastructure that can support increasingly demanding workloads across the full AI environment, not just GPU-intensive tasks.
Nutanix notes agentic applications combine inference (think GU) with tool calls, code execution, retrieval, orchestration, and outcome processing (think CPU). It says that, by pairing Nvidia’s purpose-built CPU architecture – engineered for high-speed agent execution and reduced latency – and OpenShell to create safe, private runtime environments for agents with NKP, the collaboration aims to give organizations a predictable, high-performance foundation for their most advanced AI agents.
Regarding the Supermicro deal, Nutanix says that, by combining Supermicro servers and Nvidia GPUs - think Vera Rubin - with Nutanix Agentic AI (NAI) and Nvidia Spectrum-X networking, enterprise customers reduce custom configuration and integration delays, get on-premises GPU capacity and take on runaway AI costs. Customers should get a predictable path to deploy, manage, and scale AI inference workloads without the bother of a complex, multivendor environment.
Nutanix and Netris are collaborating for neocloud-like customers to automate network-layer multi-tenancy and turn complex GPU infrastructure into secure, cloud-like, multi-tenant AI services.
Nutanix will provide a compute foundation across virtual machines, containers, CPUs, and GPUs, along with storage, security, Kubernetes, and Nutanix Agent Gateway, model-as-a-service and AI platform services. Netris will provide network automation, abstraction, and multi-tenancy across the physical network fabric, with hard isolation (enforced on networking hardware) from compute through the physical network.
As a result, AIaaS providers - AI CSPs - will be better able to onboard tenants and deliver AI services with a self-service operating experience across bare metal and virtualized AI infrastructure.
VMware, Nutanix’ main competitor, does not yet have any public Vera support plans, being x86 and not Arm-focussed; Vera being an Arm CPU. Nor does VMware have joint-engineering server deals with Supermicro, although VMware does certify Supermicro gear as vSAN-ready nodes and collaborate around VMware AI factory management.
VMware does not have a Netris partnership, but Netris documentation lists support for VMware vSphere.
