Senate Democrats’ campaign arm is spending $500,000 with Mississippi Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom in a coordinated ad buy, according to details first shared with Semafor.
The new ad from Colom and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee features Colom touting his record as a district attorney and says he’ll “take on anyone who stands in the way of what’s best for Mississippi.” He also criticizes incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., as having “forgotten” the state in the spot. The ad will run statewide on TV and digital starting on Thursday.
“Senate Democrats have expanded the battleground deep into Republican territory and we are continuing to pursue every path possible to win a Senate majority,” said Tommy Garcia, a spokesperson for the DSCC.
Both major super PACS — the Democratic Senate Majority PAC, which is aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Republican Senate Leadership Fund, which is aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune — are each spending seven figures in Mississippi, a sign of the red state Senate race heating up unexpectedly.
Schumer first floated the possibility of getting more involved in Mississippi in August, deeming the race a “long shot” for Democrats but describing Hyde-Smith as vulnerable. Hyde-Smith blocked Colom’s appointment to a federal judgeship during Joe Biden’s presidency; Schumer told Semafor earlier this year that “the people of Mississippi remember that.”
President Donald Trump campaigned with Hyde-Smith earlier this week, attacking Colom as a “fake … who pretends to be moderate.”
