Special Weather Statement — Noatak Valley; Kivalina and Red Dog Dock; Lower Kobuk Valley; Baldwin Peninsula; Northern Seward Peninsula; Shishmaref; Bering Strait Coast; Southern Seward Peninsula Coast; Interior Seward Peninsula; Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills; Yukon Delta Coast; St Lawrence Island
Severity: Moderate. Certainty: Observed.
As a coastal system moves across Western Alaska Sunday into
Monday, elevated water levels, widespread rain, and southerly
winds are expected across the area. Water levels could rise 1 to
3 feet above the mean high tide line in coastal areas of the
Bering and Chukchi Seas. Rain totals from Sunday afternoon
through early Tuesday morning are expected to range from 1 to 2
inches south of the Bering Strait and from 0.5 to 1 inch north of
the Bering Strait. From Sunday afternoon through Tuesday night,
southerly winds could gust to 30 to 40 mph, with gusts over 40 mph
possible over the YK Delta. Those in coastal areas should take
extra precautions to ensure that belongings are properly secured
ahead of these increasing winds and water levels.
