Welcome to Source Material, a weekly series where the designers and creatives shaping culture share the references that shaped them. Our next guest is Manon Macasaet (@mingblingbling), a designer, artist, and creative director who founded fashion brand Poison Candy Apple.
After the shoot, we caught up with Manon about her creative process:
What were you making when you realized, “This could be my job”?
I realized this could be my job when I started my webseries “STORY OF MY FUCKING LIFE.” It’s one of my more notable video projects, a crunk downtown New York Sesame Street that chronicled my life in 2020. It was a super well-rounded video series that helped me develop most of my visual language, creative direction, and team-building abilities. I need to bring it back.
What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work?
It changes all the time. I try to set an intention, and sometimes I pray. I’m quite a spiritual person and need to feel clear-headed when I’m doing creative work.
What’s a design object you’d take to your grave?
My “Helter Skelter” book by Mika Ninagawa, it’s like my style bible.
Whose work makes you jealous?
Mika Ninagawa. She directed the movie “Helter Skelter,” which is like the OG version of “The Substance.” Or honestly, Spike Jonze. I wish I had directed “Jackass” so bad.
What current design trend are you tired of seeing?
Minimalism. I’m bored.
What rule do you break the most?
This is a tough one, but when I was filming my web show I broke a lot of rules while sneaking into certain places to get certain shots. You gotta do what you gotta do.
What song do you put on to get out of a creative rut?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Snoopy library jazz to get in the zone lately.
What’s a piece of feedback you resisted, and later realized was right?
To rest when I feel burnt out. I used to not think this was okay, but now I know it is essential.
What’s a part of your process that most people don’t know about?
I think the spiritual piece. I take it very seriously, more than people might know.
What’s the last thing you came across that made you want to go make something?
My dear friend Camille has recently become a huge team player in my brand Poison Candy Apple’s operations. I’m going to make a piece inspired by her because our friendship inspires me daily. My friends and community are a huge part of my world, and in turn, show up in my work.
