Special Weather Statement — Pohnpei Coastal Waters; Kosrae Coastal Waters
Severity: Moderate. Certainty: Observed.
Invest 96W is currently rated as "High" for development by the Joint
Typhoon Warning Center, and is the subject of a Tropical Cyclone
Formation Alert, meaning development into a significant tropical
cyclone (a tropical depression) is expected within 24 hours. 96W is
currently located northeast of Pohnpei near 8.7N 160.7E, and
continues to develop and strengthen just north of the region.
Convergent fresh to strong westerlies south of 96W's center are
producing bands of scattered to numerous showers capable of strong
gusts and locally heavy rainfall, across Kosrae, Pohnpei, and their
adjacent coastal waters. Ensemble model guidance suggests rainfall
amounts of 2 to 4 inches will be possible for Pohnpei through late
Friday night as 96W strengthens and passes north of the island, with
an additional 1 to 2 inches possible for Kosrae through early
Thursday morning as conditions start to ease there. Gusts to 30 knots
will be possible near heavier showers.

Gusty winds and elevated, choppy seas will make marine conditions
hazardous to small craft, and inter-island travel is discouraged.
Keep up to date with the latest information from the National Weather
Service in Tiyan, Guam, and your local emergency management.
