ExaGrid replaces record number of Dell Data Domain appliances
Tiered purpose-built backup appliance provider ExaGrid had yet another growth quarter, with an 80 percent plus win rate as its customer count went past 5,200 in the second 2026 quarter.
The company has introduced all-flash appliances but the NAND shortage and price rises have diminished their appeal and its disk-based systems, with their fast, deduplication-free ingested data landing zone and quick restore, are taking the lead. This will have affected, we understand, all flash-based backup target suppliers.
President and CEO Bill Andrews said: “ExaGrid continues to grow and has become the largest independent backup storage vendor in the world. ExaGrid has won the most industry awards for backup storage and was honored with another 10 awards in Q2 with the support of our partners and customers.”
ExaGrid recruited 207 new customers in the quarter, recording 99 six- and seven-figure new logo customer deals. More than half of its bookings came from outside the USA and it has installations in 108 countries, with sales and support teams in 30 countries. It said it enjoyed double-digit revenue growth over Q2 of 2025 and double-digit revenue growth for the first six months of 2026 over 2025.
The company said it replaced a record number of Dell Data Domain appliances in the quarter. Dell claims there are more than 15,000 PowerProtect/Data Domain customers. We don't know how many Data Domain systems are replaced by ExaGrid each quarter. Assume it averages 20, 80 a year, and it looks like ExaGrid can keep chipping away at the Dell customer base for years to come.
In Andrews’ view, customers wanting backup data target appliances “have only three choices: standard primary storage as a backup target which is expensive, has no backup app integrations and is vulnerable for security attacks, or inline deduplication appliances which are slow for backups, slow for restores, not scalable and are open to security attacks, or ExaGrid Tiered Backup Storage which is fast for backups and restores, scale-out as data grows and has the only integrated tiered air gap and AI-Powered Retention Time-Lock for security.”
ExaGrid's appliances support Veeam, Commvault, NetBackup, Rubrik, Oracle RMAN direct, HYCU, Acronis and many other backup applications and utilities. ExaGrid will soon formally announce support of Cohesity DataProtect and, in fact, has already been shipping this capability.
Andrews expects “a strong second half of the year as we continue to innovate and add support for key features that fulfill all of the requirements that enterprise organizations look for in … backup storage.”
ExaGrid is a dollar-printing machine, as the company has been cash, EBITDA, and P&L positive over the last 22 quarters and is debt-free.
