Apple has launched its Apple Pay payment service in India, with Axis Bank as its first banking partner. At launch, the service supports Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank. The rollout allows iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch users to make payments at contactless enabled stores, in apps and online. Mac support is expected soon.
The service is being enabled across merchant networks through payment infrastructure players including Razorpay and Cashfree, along with Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Juspay and Worldline.
Juspay said merchants on its network can add Apple Pay to their existing online payment flows without building a separate integration.
Cashfree has also enabled Apple Pay for its Indian business customers as part of the rollout. Apple said it has worked with Cashfree and other payment service providers to bring Apple Pay to their merchant networks in India.
Commenting on the launch, Amitabh Chaudhry, MD & CEO, Axis Bank, said, “We are at a significant inflection point in payments, where technology, intelligent security and changing customer expectations are reshaping how people transact. At Axis Bank, our aspiration is to remain at the forefront of this transformation by building payment experiences that are progressive, trusted and deeply relevant to our customers."
For in store payments, users can double click the side button on their iPhone, authenticate through Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode and hold the device near a contactless payment terminal.
Apple Pay can also be used on supported apps and websites without requiring users to enter card details repeatedly. Users can add eligible cards through the Wallet app or the Axis Bank app.
At launch, Apple Pay will be accepted at millions of merchants across India, including Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato.
Apple Pay does not support UPI or RuPay cards at launch. The service is currently limited to eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank.
Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions and works with more than 11,000 bank and network partners globally.
