US stock markets surged on Friday after a sharp sell-off in the previous trading session, as some stability returned to the bond market and helped ease pressure across financial markets.
As of 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time, the S&P 500 rose 0.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.2% higher.
At the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 9.7 points, or 0.02%, to 52768.87. The S&P 500 rose 24.5 points, or 0.32%, to 7665.68, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 131.7 points, or 0.51%, to 26198.835.
Bond trading remained volatile on Friday, but movements in Treasury yields were less pronounced than earlier in the week. The relative calm in the bond market helped support investor sentiment and allowed the major US equity indices to recover.
Recent trading in US financial markets has been heavily influenced by investor concerns over efforts by the US Treasury to contain the rise in long-term government bond yields through a bond buyback programme.
The announcement of the programme on Wednesday helped limit the increase in Treasury yields for a couple of sessions. However, yields moved slightly higher again on Thursday, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rising to 4.71% from 4.69%.
Investors are now closely watching signals from the US administration about the possibility of further action in the bond market. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that the Trump administration could consider additional interventions, potentially involving larger purchases, as policymakers seek to manage longer-term borrowing costs.
Markets are attempting to assess what any further measures could involve and how effective they might be in preventing yields from moving substantially higher.
Persistently elevated long-term Treasury yields remain a concern for investors because they indicate expectations that inflation could stay high for an extended period. Higher inflation expectations can, in turn, keep interest rates elevated for longer, potentially increasing borrowing costs for businesses and consumer.
In geopolitical developments, uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continued as tensions persisted between Iran and the United States. The ongoing standoff has kept attention focused on the strategically important shipping route and the potential implications for global energy supplies and financial markets.
The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil added 0.4% to $94.09 after flipping repeatedly within a roughly $2 band.
Crypto stocks rallied following Bitcoin’s surge above $76,500 from less than $63,000 a week ago.
Shares of Robinhood Markets climbed 8.8%, and Coinbase Global rose 7.8%.
Ross Stores Stock soared 3.8% after reporting stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected.
