Jailbroken PS5s can now run Steam PC games — you can now sign in with your Steam account and install games from your library directly to the console
Who needs a PC when you have jailbroken PS5?
Gamers can now experiment with playing their favorite Steam titles on a jailbroken PlayStation 5. The game launcher is actually based on the Playden launcher designed for macOS and adapted for the PlayStation, allowing you to sign in with your Steam account and install games from your library directly to the console. Playden for PS5 is a GitHub project that lets you run Steam games on the console, notes VideoCardz. When you launch a game on Playden for PS5, it sets a private Windows environment and is run through prospero-win, which is a PS5 port of Wine.
Note that the launcher itself does not run the game — instead it builds a separate PS5 app created for the game that you installed, allowing the Steam title to appear as a separate tile on the console’s home screen. Aside from that, its files, settings, and crashes are isolated from the launcher and other games. There’s also a separate runtime kit that handles Wine for PS5, the required graphics drivers, the Windows environment, and a template app shell for your games.
While Playden for PS5 successfully launches Steam games, it does not necessarily mean a smooth start-to-end experience for every title. The creator notes that it’s still in the Alpha stage of development, with X user v7dt1 saying that even though they were able to launch a game, it eventually crashed. On the other hand, u/Cevap shared on the r/PS5_Jailbreak subreddit that they were able to play Portal through the launcher with no issues, except for the lack of a mouse cursor and the inability to hit ESC to open the options menu. Still, the developer of the launcher lists several compatible games, including American Truck Simulator, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, GTA: Vice City, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, and more.
Of course, users need a jailbroken PlayStation 5 if they want to use this launcher. But aside from that, the creator said that using it poses several risks, including the fact that it’s an unofficial Steam client. While there haven’t been any problems with third-party Steam clients, the app notes that Valve does not officially support it and any risk that comes with the use of the launcher “is yours to accept.”
Sony announced that it will cease physical game disc production by January 2028, which did not sit well among many fans. In fact, a petition against the move has nearly hit 200,000 signatures just a week after the announcement. Alongside that announcement, we started seeing a number of jailbreaks and emulators for the PS5, allowing users to take back control of their hardware, likely to the chagrin of Sony executives.

That may be what the Xbox Helix is, a lightly locked down gaming PC. We'll believe it when we see it.
Although selling games and subscriptions is where the real money is, Sony probably isn't selling PS5s at a loss. Certainly not now, and probably not for most of its lifespan. Reply
- TerryLaze Cracked consoles (cloned games for way back) have been a thing since the dawn of time, it never caused the consoles as a whole to die.
Sony will tie newer titles to newer firmware that isn't cracked yet still making their money as usual.
Also people wildly overestimate how many people ever even find out about their console being hackable and/or how many would do it even if they knew. Reply

They're not exactly overly expensive components.Sure but people want the ease of the console, very few people know how to put these parts together and they don't want to learn either, they want to buy one completely assembled thing that is guaranteed to play everything that is labeled the same as it (any ps5 game will play on any ps5 console) and be worry free.
Ain't nobody gonna sit there installing oses and putting hardware together and trying to figure out settings and driver issues... Reply

Also people wildly overestimate how many people ever even find out about their console being hackable and/or how many would do it even if they knew.Except their new firmware's have been cracked in a day or less on average as of late. I do agree cracks and homebrew alone aren't enough to kill consoles atp. If it gets popular enough, very unlikely, it could drive prices up as Sony wamts to make cash off not only hw where margins are thin but also more importantly software sales.
That said Sony might well be in trouble. Killing physical media has been the singular largest misstep PlayStation has ever taken. Never have I seen them face such heavy on going relentless backlash on their platform. So I do see a world where next gen, this costs them 30-40% of their current gaming marketshare. A world whether one of the other consoke makers absorbs them, PC, phone or worse Cloud gaming (no luv for cloud gaming personally). And some may just walk away do to the completely insane prices.
salgado18 said:Or their ressurgence: a PS5 is technically porwerful for the price, compared to a PC.That is likely wishful thinking. i don't believe consoles as a whole are in real long term trouble yet... but being jailbroken daily isn't a resurgence, its a protest from pissed off gamers. A very smart bunch of nerds (said with luv as I am one) who don't take kindly to being mistreated or ignored... which I'd argue Sony is doing both right now.
I love gaming. PC and consoles have always been a large part of that. I have loved PS for thirty years more or less. I boycotted ps3 over first ps2 reliability then ps3 pricing followed XB1 over the same plus drm. Everytime I have been angry enough to step away from a console maker, that generation has performed poorly or had more competition than normal. I see this as no different. PS6 will likely struggle next gen or at least be in a real fight for 1st place unlike ps4/ps5 faced.
Fact is I think Sony will face some form of a minor to mass exodus next gen from their unpopular and/or poor choices this year. Be it the lack of consumer satisfaction over the death? of physical, price or the general brand damage they did in the last six months which has been huge historically speaking. Sony for the first time in a long time does not have next gen on lock down. The wild west days of gen 6/7 may well have returned. This might not be a resurgence for consoles as a whole but for certain players like MS, it could be the start of a new chapter or it could herald the end of brand(s) as we know them. Reply

PC gaming is knocking on your door and it nearly matches all of console spending combined. There will always be some folks who want easy. But to go that far when so many are truly pissed at Sony, is a stretching reality itself you're being so dismissive of the truth. Reply

They're not exactly overly expensive components.I think there was a moment in time where a fully cracked PS5 turned PC would have made sense, even at $500, definitely when it was something like $300 on the used market. 16 GB GDDR6 is not ideal PC memory, but it's usable, 8-core Zen 2 is not super fast, but good enough, it has a reasonably powerful RX 6700-ish iGPU, and a relatively nice SSD. All in a complete package, ready to go.
Some people were able to get the BC-250 (PS5 turned into a cryptocurrency mining product) for sub-$200, turn that into a decent PC, and even unlock CPU and GPU cores if they are lucky and prepared to tinker with it.
Similarly, something like an Xbox Series S at $150-200 was interesting, except in that case, you could access a Developer Mode (for $19) and sideload Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications, such as emulators.
I guess the value proposition on all of these has been thoroughly ruined, but maybe we'll have better luck next time. Reply
