"Naturally as one of the largest card issuing banks we will get 40 basis points of the value. Then we also have a payments rail road on the UPI network which is not as famous a Gpay or Phone Pay but still formidable. We also have a application which has many customers on board. All this means that we will make a surplus but we have not yet done the calculations," the official said.

From October 15, 2026, UPI payments above Rs 2,000 will attract a MDR of 0.4%. This is the first time MDR has been charged on the hugely successful UPI payments since 2020.
The charges are likely to be split between the issuing bank, acquiring bank, payment gateways and UPI applications like GPay and PhonePay.
Issuing bank whose debit or credit card is used is likely to receive 0.40% of the transaction amount as fees, acquiring bank in which account the amount is credited will receive 0.30%, payment gateways 0.20% and application services 0.10%.
"Since we are both a large acquiring and issuing bank we will automatically get a large chunk of the amount. We also have a payment system and an application services so it is fair to assume that we will make some money though we have not done the calculations," the official said.

SBI is still evaluating the MDR implications. "There are also reports that people will split the transactions to avoid charges which means our volumes will increase but our value will not increase and it will create pressure on our systems. So we have to evaluate all those aspects," the official said.
Replying to another question he said SBI has garnered $10 billion from FCNR (B) inflows which it is confident of deploying.
"We annually garner Rs 5.5 lakh crore from normal deposits which we comfortably deploy so another Rs 90,000 crore should not be a problem. It could be a problem for smaller banks because it will mean they may have to enter new segments like corporate lending but we will be able to manage," the official said.
