Insight and analysis on the data center space from industry thought leaders. Zinc Whiskers: The Hidden Contamination Risk Beneath Data Center Floors As AI density and airflow rise, legacy raised-floor and zinc-plated components can shed conductive whiskers that jeopardize equipment reliability. As data centers evolve to support higher-density computing and AI infrastructure, attention naturally goes to power, cooling, and equipment reliability. A less visible issue also deserves attention in that discussion: zinc whiskers. The risk isn’t new, but the operating conditions inside today’s facilities – especially increases in airflow – make it worth revisiting. Zinc whiskers are microscopic, electrically conductive crystalline filaments that can grow from electroplated zinc surfaces. In data centers, the best-documented source is the underside of older raised-floor tiles. However, cable trays, pedestals, stringers, electrical hardware, and other zinc-plated components can also be susceptible. The risk arises when whiskers detach, become airborne, and are carried by the cooling airflow. Once inside equipment, they can settle on circuit boards and other components, potentially creating unintended conductive paths, signal disturbances, and equipment failures. A Risk Hidden in Legacy Infrastructure Whiskers can be difficult to identify without the appropriate inspection techniques, and growth may take months or years to become apparent. The risk is particularly relevant to older facilities and buildings with mixed-vintage infrastructure. Modern raised-floor manufacturing has shifted toward materials and coatings that behave differently from the electroplated zinc historically associated with whisker growth. That means the risk is not uniform across every data center. However, facilities that have been operating for decades or contain legacy infrastructure should not assume the problem is purely theoretical. Routine facility work can increase exposure. Moving floor tiles, running new cabling, reconfiguring equipment, or conducting nearby construction can disturb accumulated whiskers and release them into the environment. AI Infrastructure Changes the Equation The growth of AI infrastructure adds another consideration. High-density GPU clusters move significantly more air than traditional computing infrastructure. Increased airflow through a subfloor plenum can create more opportunities for contaminants to become airborne and travel toward equipment. As data centers become denser and move more air, operators need to look beyond the newest technology and understand the conditions created by the infrastructure already in place. AI deployments also represent a substantially greater equipment investment in many facilities. That makes contamination control an operational consideration, not simply a housekeeping issue. When Cleaning Can Make the Problem Worse Conventional cleaning practices may be counterproductive. Vacuuming without HEPA filtration can aerosolize whiskers and release them back into the environment through the equipment’s exhaust. Sweeping, brushing, or other aggressive mechanical cleaning can disturb susceptible surfaces and shed additional whiskers. Even moving floor tiles can spread contamination. A maintenance activity intended to improve conditions in one area can seed a wider contamination event if the underlying risk is not identified. That makes identification the first step. High-intensity oblique lighting can help reveal whiskers through reflection, allowing facility teams to inspect susceptible surfaces before beginning cleaning or maintenance activities. A More Controlled Response Once contamination is identified, the response should focus on both containment and removal. Work areas may need to be isolated, airflow controlled, and nearby equipment intakes protected to prevent migration into unaffected areas. Cleaning alone may not solve the problem if a component is actively generating whiskers. Source remediation can include replacing affected floor tiles or other components with non-whiskering alternatives. Documentation is also important. Document where contamination is identified, actions taken, and remaining conditions to support future maintenance, remediation, and operational decisions. Zinc whiskers are not a universal threat to every data center, but in facilities with older raised-floor systems, legacy infrastructure, or mixed-vintage environments, they represent a contamination risk worth understanding and managing. As operators invest heavily in AI and higher-density computing, reliability depends not only on the newest technology entering the data center but also on the conditions created by the infrastructure already in place.
