GIFT City Unlocked: What investors need to know about accessing global markets

retained text

The opportunity is particularly relevant for HNIs and family offices seeking greater international diversification, but GIFT City's ecosystem is not limited to them. Depending on the product and applicable regulations, individual and other investors can also access opportunities through the International Financial Services Centre.
That makes an important question worth asking: what does GIFT City actually change for an investor looking to invest globally? T
he discussion will take centre stage at the ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0 in Mumbai on October 8, exploring the regulatory frontier around GIFT City and its evolving role in global investing. The session will feature Prithipal Singh, Head of Business Development at Aequitas Investment Consultancy.
Why is GIFT City gaining attention?
GIFT City is designed to function as an international financial centre, bringing fund managers, financial institutions and investors into an ecosystem focused on global financial activity.
For investors, this can mean access to products and structures designed for international investing without having to look only at conventional domestic routes. For HNIs, it can also provide another avenue to build and manage a globally diversified portfolio.
What can investors access?
One of the key attractions is the range of fund structures and investment products being developed within the GIFT IFSC ecosystem. These can provide exposure to international assets and strategies across different segments.
For investors, however, the product is only one part of the decision. The structure through which the investment is made can affect costs, taxation, liquidity and the overall risk involved.
What should investors keep in mind?
The promise of greater global access does not remove the need for due diligence. Investors should understand the underlying assets, fund structure, currency exposure, liquidity and applicable regulations before committing capital.
Tax efficiency can also be an important consideration, particularly for HNIs and family offices, but it should not be the sole reason for choosing a particular structure.
Ultimately, GIFT City is best viewed as an additional gateway to global markets rather than a shortcut to higher returns. The right approach will depend on an investor's goals, risk appetite, investment horizon and existing portfolio.
