Share Source material: Designer Ben Ganz on pushing the limits of what we can do Welcome to Source Material, a weekly series where the designers and creatives shaping culture share the references that shaped them. Our next guest is Ben Lanz, the Switzerland-based designer and creative director behind PIN-UP Magazine. After the shoot, we caught up with Ben about his creative process: What were you making when you realized, “This could be my job”? Potato prints in elementary school. What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to work? Make a to-do list. What’s a design object you’d take to your grave? My wedding band. Whose work makes you jealous? What current design trend are you tired of seeing? Optimized workflows. What rule do you break the most? Probably grids? What song do you put on to get out of a creative rut? “Als wär's das letzte Mal” by Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF). What’s a piece of feedback you resisted, and later realized was right? Innovate as a last resort. What’s a part of your process that most people don’t know about? There are no shortcuts or secrets. What’s the last thing you came across that made you want to go make something? A wooden Stabelle chair in my grandma’s chalet. Catch up on previous episodes of Source Material on YouTube.
