Listen to this article in summarized format The Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (ICEMA) estimates construction and infrastructure equipment exports to be 20,701 units in the fiscal year ending March 2027, up from 17,396 units in FY26, despite geopolitical headwinds. Exports rose about 32% last fiscal year, on a lower base. Exports were 11,990 units in FY24. Shipments rose by 5% to $24 billion in auto components, by 63% to Rs $4.6 billion in defence hardware and by 25% to $48 billion in electronics goods last financial year. Backed by a large domestic market, deepening localisation, an established supplier ecosystem and cost-competitive engineering talent, India is positioning itself as an alternative manufacturing hub for complex machinery worldwide, senior industry executives said. The local market is the third-largest globally after the US and China and is projected to become the second by 2030. While India has “significant potential” to emerge as a global manufacturing and export hub for construction equipment, the broader engineering export ecosystem is also demonstrating the country’s growing global competitiveness, said Sandeep Singh, managing director at Tata Hitachi Construction Equipment Co. “However, the change in the geopolitical setup with the crisis in the Middle East, as well as the imposition of tariffs by many countries, is a major challenge to navigate the export market. The cost of logistics and vessel availability has significantly deteriorated since the Gulf crisis, and the industry is closely watching these developments to adapt to the overseas requirements,” he said. For Tata Hitachi, exports represent a long-term opportunity, he said. The focus is not only on exporting machines, but on developing products engineered and manufactured in India for global applications. The company is seeing particularly strong potential in South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and other emerging markets, where infrastructure development, road construction, mining and urbanisation are creating demand for competitively positioned equipment, Singh said. JCB India, the largest exporter, is targeting 15-20% growth in exports this fiscal year. “Last year we exported around 14,000 units to several markets, including the developed geographies. The US contributed a major share of our exports,” Shetty said. The company exports to around 135 countries, including in Southeast Asia and Africa. Industry executives said the construction equipment industry is witnessing a clear improvement in demand momentum both in the local and in international markets, as infrastructure project execution gathers pace. According to ICEMA, construction equipment sales this fiscal year until July grew 14% from a year earlier. While exports rose 29%, local sales also remained strong, with an expansion of 12%. “The government's focus on developing infrastructure projects, increased execution across roads, highways, railways, urban infrastructure, mining, irrigation and industrial projects is supporting demand,” JCB’s Shetty said.
