While strong earnings were not enough to rescue stocks in this unpredictable market, CNBC's Jim Cramer warned on Wednesday that investors who give up now could miss out on the next rally. Stocks tumbled on the session, with the S&P 500 down just over 1%, the Nasdaq shedding 1.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing slightly lower. Cramer said that uncertainty surrounding inflation, interest rates and the war with Iran makes it nearly impossible to anticipate the market's next move. "You just want to throw things away and go home," the "Mad Money" host added. "If you do, though, will you be able to buy them back in time for those 10 days of the year where all the gains are made? I don't think so." Historical market data underscores that risk. According to JPMorgan, an investor who put $10,000 into the S&P 500 and missed its 10 best trading days between 2005 and 2024 would have ended up with less than half the wealth of someone who stayed fully invested. Cramer pointed to Wednesday's inflation report as an example of the market's unpredictability. Consumer prices rose 0.6% in September from the previous month, slightly more than expected, initially sending Treasury yields higher. They later reversed course, even as oil prices continued climbing. Typically, hotter inflation pushes yields higher as investors anticipate more aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The conflicting signals have complicated the expectations game regarding the Federal Reserve's next move. Another rate hike could slow the economy, while holding rates steady risks pushing long-term borrowing costs higher. Cramer argued that an end to the war with Iran could send oil prices sharply lower, easing inflation without further Fed intervention. Corporate earnings have offered little clarity. Investment bank Morgan Stanley reported a decent quarter, but shares still fell nearly 3%. Similarly, semiconductor equipment maker ASML reported strong earnings and growing demand, only to see its stock reverse early gains and close down 4% alongside the broader chip sector rout. With economic data and corporate results failing to provide clear direction, he said that "it becomes very hard to have conviction." Still, he cautioned against abandoning stocks altogether.
