Tesla shares rallied sharply on Thursday as investors positioned themselves ahead of the company’s closely watched Cybercab event in Austin, Texas. The event was seen as a major test of Tesla’s ambitions to become a leader in autonomous transportation. (Sources: CNBC, Investing.com, TradingView) The focus was firmly on Tesla’s two-seat Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla plans to use the vehicle as a key part of its expanding robotaxi network. Tesla stock gained more than 5% during Thursday’s trading session, with the shares reaching an intraday high of around $383.91 before closing at $376.37. The rally marked one of the stock’s strongest daily performances in recent months. Investors are increasingly viewing Tesla’s autonomous-driving business as an important source of future growth. The Cybercab could help Tesla expand robotaxi operations at scale and potentially strengthen the company’s long-term technology and mobility story. Tesla has already begun offering limited Cybercab rides in Austin. The new vehicles are being added alongside Model Y robotaxis, with customers initially expected to receive either vehicle based on availability when booking through Tesla’s robotaxi service. The formal Cybercab launch was structured as an invite-only event, with attendees reportedly facing restrictions on sharing information from the event. The limited-access format added to the anticipation surrounding Tesla’s latest autonomous-driving push. One of the major questions for investors is how cheaply Tesla can produce and operate the Cybercab. StoneX reiterated a Buy rating and a $475 price target, highlighting Tesla’s ambition for a sub-$30,000 vehicle as an important part of its robotaxi strategy. Tesla is entering an increasingly competitive robotaxi market. Waymo has already built a substantially larger driverless fleet, meaning Tesla will need to demonstrate that its technology can scale safely, reliably and economically to close the gap. The Cybercab rollout is also attracting regulatory attention. Reuters reported that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evaluating the launch because federal safety rules generally require vehicles to have manual controls, creating an important regulatory challenge for Tesla’s steering-wheel-free design. The Cybercab event could ultimately be judged less on the vehicle’s design and more on Tesla’s ability to demonstrate real-world deployment, fleet expansion, pricing and regulatory progress. For investors, evidence of meaningful robotaxi scale could determine whether the recent stock rally has further room to run.
