In May 2026, a small crowd gathered at a stadium in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada to watch a balloon lift off towards the sky. Little did the spectators know that this was a historic first for India. The floating device was an indigenous super-pressure balloon designed to remain afloat in the stratosphere for months rather than hours. The balloon belonged to Red Balloon Aerospace, a Vijayawada-based venture founded by former Skyroot Aerospace executives CVS Kiran and Sireesh Pallikonda. The startup is building a suite of near-space platforms, including superpressure balloons, aerostats and solar-powered airships, capable of operating nearly 20 km above Earth. By targeting this region, Red Balloon Aerospace is trying to carve a niche in the largely unoccupied middle layer between traditional aviation and orbital space. This near-space zone, called the stratosphere, is a largely uncharted domain defined by thin air density, extreme cold and severe radiation. “One of the biggest barriers to operating in near space is the environment itself. Conventional aircraft can typically fly only up to about 15 km as the thin air at higher altitudes doesn't provide enough oxygen to sustain combustion. Beyond that, temperatures can plunge to as low as -80°C, demanding materials that are both ultra-lightweight and exceptionally durable. These harsh conditions have kept the stratosphere largely unexplored,” said Kiran. Yet, the startup believes this layer of the atmosphere could hold the answers to several of Earth’s pressing infrastructural challenges. Currently, governments and enterprises rely on a combination of satellites, drones and terrestrial networks to monitor crops, track natural disasters in real time and bring internet connectivity to remote areas. However, each comes with limitations: satellites are expensive, drones offer limited endurance, and ground networks are expensive to deploy across difficult terrain. Red Balloon aims to bridge this exact gap. Its founders believe that this overlooked corridor can become an entirely new infrastructure stack for communications, earth observation, disaster management and scientific research. But convincing the world that balloons belong to the future of aerospace may be just as challenging as building them. A Startup Two Decades In The Making Their paths to near-space innovation were years in the making. Kiran spent nearly 16 years in Germany conducting materials science research before returning to India to join ISRO, where he worked on near-space technologies. Pallikonda worked on unmanned aerial vehicles at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) before joining satellite operator SES in Luxembourg, where he gained exposure to the commercial side of the global space industry. The two met while working at Skyroot, where they spotted the opportunity that would eventually become Red Balloon. While working with satellite clients, they noticed a recurring problem: many customers wanted to validate their payloads in near-space conditions before orbital launch, but India offered few viable avenues. The revelation became the starting point for Red Balloon Aerospace. The founders spent months researching whether the opportunity justified launching a new venture. Their market analysis revealed that satellite testing was merely the entry point. “We realised spacecraft testing alone wasn't a sustainable business. The bigger opportunity was building platforms that could remain over one location in near space for long durations. This proximity enables far lower latency and much higher-resolution imaging, opening up applications in 6G, earth observation, and beyond,” said Pallikonda. In short, the stratosphere was not just an underutilised testing environment, but also had the potential to become an entirely new infrastructure layer. Driven by this insight, the duo founded Red Balloon Aerospace in 2025. Rather than chasing the end goal all at once, the startup adopted a disciplined, phased approach. It started with super-pressure balloons to demonstrate long-duration near-space capability, and is now expanding into aerostats and solar-powered airships. Aiming For The Stars To conquer the stratosphere, Red Balloon is taking a phased approach to its hardware stack. Each of its products is engineered to solve a distinct operational challenge in near space: Vista: The flagship superpressure balloon completed its maiden flight in May 2026. But unlike conventional weather balloons that stay airborne for only a day or two, Vista is engineered to float in the stratosphere for over six months, carrying payloads up to 25 tonnes. Altis: A tethered aerostat to test and validate systems and payloads before they are deployed on free-flying platforms. Helix: The startup’s endgame is a reusable, solar-and-battery-powered airship designed to hover nearly 20 km above Earth for extended periods. Powered by solar energy and batteries, Helix is envisioned as a reusable high-altitude platform for communications, earth observation and surveillance. Sitting above the hardware is Dive, an AI-powered analytics platform that turns raw aerial imagery into real-time, actionable intelligence for governments and enterprises. "During disasters like floods and earthquakes, governments are flooded with images from satellites and UAVs, but turning them into actionable insights can take days. Dive automates that analysis, helping authorities identify affected areas and speed up relief and insurance decisions,” Pallikonda explained. All three hardware platforms rely on a shared tech stack, which spans avionics, ground infrastructure and envelope materials. This modular approach lets Red Balloon reuse technology across platforms while reducing development costs. The economic potential is vast. Pallikonda claims that operating a single airship 20 km above Earth can replace nearly 400 traditional cell towers, which typically cost ₹2 Cr to ₹3 Cr each to erect. But the primary engineering hurdle lay in building a material that could sustain the low air density and extremely low temperatures of the stratosphere. "The material has to be light enough to fly but strong enough not to burst. Getting that balance right is the entire challenge," said Kiran. To solve this, Red Balloon developed a multi-layer nanocomposite film, which is 30-65 microns thick (roughly the width of a human hair). Supported by its proprietary manufacturing equipment and a 20,000 sq ft facility in Vijayawada, the startup has filed three provisional patents covering its materials, manufacturing processes, gas handling, and testing infrastructure. But building a product is only one piece of the puzzle. Monetising The Stratosphere On the business front, Red Balloon monetises access to the stratosphere through two distinct pathways: rideshare and dedicated missions. Under the rideshare model, the startup undertakes a launch every month or two. It handles power and communications, while clients supply their payloads. Meanwhile, the dedicated route offers customised launches for non-standard payload sizes and altitudes. Pricing varies depending on the payload weight, target altitude and mission duration. While not yet fully commercial, the startup claims to have already secured commitments for at least eight shared and dedicated missions from spacetech firms following its maiden near-space launch. Yet, spacecraft testing is merely the entry point. Red Balloon is eyeing use cases across sectors such as communications, disaster management, agriculture, maritime surveillance, mineral exploration, scientific research and earth observation. The founders also believe the ultimate long-term opportunity lies in non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), a core technology expected to underpin future 6G connectivity. However, operating in the stratosphere requires far more than open skies. Regulation governing Red Balloon runs along three parallel tracks: flight authorisation is needed from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) imaging has to comply with India’s geospatial and drone policies communications need spectrum clearance from the nation’s Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) wing For now, Red Balloon operates on experimental frequencies, with plans to eventually partner with licensed telecom entities rather than pursue its own license. Beyond regulatory hurdles, the startup’s biggest challenge has been constructing the ecosystem around its balloons. With no established supply chain for near-space platforms in India, Red Balloon had to create much of the value chain itself. On the competition front, Red Balloon Aerospace locks horns with global players such as World View, Sceye, Near Space Labs and Urban Sky. These players are carving their niches in various sub-segments of the near-space domain: earth observation and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance), near-space tourism, airships and tethered aerostats. As Red Balloon Aerospace prepares for its upcoming seed funding round, the industry will be watching to see how far and long the startup can stay afloat in near space while simultaneously building an entire ecosystem below on Earth.
