It’s become increasingly common for people to be invited into an "exclusive" WhatsApp group, which claims to be run by market experts, analysts, or successful traders. Many operate through overseas phone numbers and claim to provide "free investor education." (Image: AI-Generated) Fake success stories build credibility: Fraudsters coordinate with accomplices inside the group who post screenshots of profits and thank the "expert" for lucrative stock recommendations. SEBI calls this tactic astroturfing, using manufactured endorsements to create the illusion of genuine investor success. (Image: AI-Generated) Members are pushed into trades: Once trust is established, group admins share buy and sell recommendations. Investors are encouraged to act quickly, often without verifying the credentials of those giving the advice. (Image: AI-Generated) Money is diverted: Victims may be asked to open accounts on unfamiliar trading platforms, transfer funds, or share trading details. Some schemes profit from market manipulation, while others simply siphon off investors' money. (Image: AI-Generated) The group disappears and reappears: When a group is reported or shut down, members often receive invitations from a new number claiming the old group was banned due to "risk control measures." The scammers then restart the cycle in a replacement group. (Image: AI-Generated) Red flags investors should watch for: Invitation-only WhatsApp groups run by unknown individuals. "Experts" using overseas phone numbers. Claims of guaranteed profits or unusually high returns. Constant testimonials and screenshots showing successful trades. Requests to join specific trading apps or transfer money to unfamiliar platforms. Messages saying a previous group was banned and asking members to join a new one.(Image: AI-Generated) Regulator’s advice: Deal only with SEBI-registered intermediaries. Verify the registration status of advisers and brokers through SEBI's official channels. Avoid acting on unsolicited stock tips received through WhatsApp groups. Don't transfer money or open accounts on platforms promoted by such groups. (Image: AI-Generated) Bottom line: These groups rely on manufactured trust, fake testimonials, urgency, and unverified stock calls. If a WhatsApp group promises easy profits and seems full of people celebrating returns, that's exactly the behaviour SEBI says investors should treat with scepticism. (Image: AI-Generated)
