Shares of Moderna surged again on Tuesday, August 25, after Wolfe Research upgraded the biotech company following encouraging late-stage results for its personalised mRNA cancer vaccine. The stock closed at $158.83, up 14.36% on the day, according to MarketScreener.(Sources: MarketScreener, Reuters) Wolfe Research raised Moderna’s rating to Peer Perform from Underperform, adding to a series of more constructive analyst views following the company’s positive cancer-vaccine trial results. Moderna and Merck’s personalised mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, also known as V940/mRNA-4157, delivered positive Phase 3 results in melanoma patients when combined with Merck’s Keytruda. The trial met its primary and key secondary endpoints, showing improvements in recurrence-free and distant metastasis-free survival compared with Keytruda alone. No new safety concerns were reported. Moderna shares have undergone an extraordinary rally since the Phase 3 announcement. The stock jumped as much as 177% in a single session, turning Moderna into one of the biggest gainers in the S&P 500. The positive melanoma data has strengthened the case for Moderna’s strategy of expanding beyond its COVID-19 vaccine business. Investors are now placing greater emphasis on the company’s oncology pipeline and mRNA platform. Bank of America raised its price target on Moderna to $170 from $40 and moved its rating to Neutral from Underperform. William Blair also upgraded the stock to Outperform, citing the potential for cancer therapies to diversify Moderna’s revenue base. The focus now shifts to regulatory submissions, additional clinical data and the potential expansion of the cancer vaccine into other tumour types. Moderna still faces significant development, manufacturing and commercialisation risks as it works to turn the clinical success into revenue. Despite the bullish catalyst, Moderna remains a highly volatile biotech stock. The shares surged sharply, then pulled back into the $130s before recovering toward $160, highlighting the risk of large price swings even after positive clinical news. Moderna’s latest rally reflects a major shift in investor expectations: its mRNA technology is increasingly being valued not just for vaccines, but for potential cancer treatments. Wolfe Research’s upgrade adds another layer of Wall Street support, although the company still needs regulatory and commercial success to justify the stock’s dramatic re-rating.
