Private-sector figures, US government representatives, and Ukrainian officials including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gathered on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to discuss strategies for propelling Ukraine’s economy despite the ongoing war with Russia.
The closed-door meeting featured companies either already operating in Ukraine or willing to invest there, to show “that investments can still flow during war,” said Stephanie Von Friedeburg, head of public-sector banking at Citi, which organized the meeting.
“War fatigue” has kept many US and European companies out of Ukraine, she said, but added that the defense sector is promising and that Citi plans to do more to facilitate M&A and venture capital investment in it.
Treasury Department officials and Ben Black, head of the US International Development Finance Corporation, joined the meeting and discussed war insurance and existing investments, Friedeburg said.
