Career Enhancement Project 1 (CEP-1) is designed to develop pathways into biomedical and behavioral health research careers. Through a year-round, hybrid career development program grounded in Diné traditional knowledge and contemporary science, CEP-1 will support the career development of undergraduate, master’s students, and post-baccalaureates, and early career investigators at NTU and Harvard University. The program focuses on health challenges relevant to Native communities, including type 2 diabetes, infectious diseases, and dietary interventions.

The core of CEP-1 will take place at Harvard University over 10 weeks during the summer, and will build upon the CEP-2 project during the academic year. Students will engage in weekly seminars, hands-on shadowing experiences, culturally informed outreach activities, and targeted skill-building workshops based on the Entering Research curriculum developed at University of Wisconsin Madison. Activities will be delivered both virtually and in-person across NTU and Harvard campuses. Coordinated closely with CEP-2 and the Administrative Core, CEP-1 will ensure cross-component collaboration and consistency. Anticipated outcomes include increased scientific self-efficacy, research readiness, and tribal representation in graduate biomedical programs. An end of summer workshop will include faculty, staff, and students from Navajo Technical University.
