Off the Wire Press Releases SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 20, 2026 — The SimOps Foundation today announced the results of its evaluation of Open OnDemand against the SimOps Best Practices Framework. The open-source HPC access platform, developed by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), is recognized as SimOps Compliant and joins the SimOps Software Stack for engineering simulation and High-Performance Computing (HPC). The evaluation compared Open OnDemand with the 20 SimOps Best Practices, a vendor-neutral framework developed from the analysis of more than 230 enterprise HPC and engineering simulation projects spanning fourteen years. The framework defines the operational practices that help organizations automate, optimize, and scale simulation-driven engineering across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid computing environments. With deployments at more than 2,100 organizations worldwide, Open OnDemand provides engineers, scientists, and researchers with secure, browser-based access to HPC resources, engineering applications, visualization, interactive computing, file management, and job execution through a unified engineering workspace. Rather than replacing resource managers, workflow engines, or cloud platforms, Open OnDemand provides an accessible operational layer between users and the underlying HPC infrastructure. “Open OnDemand was created to make advanced computing more accessible to researchers, scientists, and engineers. We are pleased to see the SimOps assessment recognize the importance of lowering barriers to these resources and helping more people take advantage of advanced computing in support of research and discovery,” said Alan Chalker, Ph.D., Director of Strategic Programs for the Ohio Supercomputer Center. Open OnDemand reaches a High compliance level in 11 of the 20 SimOps Best Practices. The assessment found particularly strong alignment in several key areas of the framework, including: - Browser-based self-service access to HPC resources - Democratization of advanced computing across engineering organizations - Interactive engineering applications and visualization - Engineering productivity and ease of adoption - Workforce development and engineering education - Hybrid HPC and cloud accessibility - Cross-functional collaboration - Vendor-neutral support for heterogeneous HPC environment These capabilities address an important dimension of Simulation Operations: making advanced computing accessible and usable by the people who need it, while reducing the operational barriers that can limit broader adoption of simulation-driven engineering. “For many, Open OnDemand access is the first step into High-Performance Computing. People who would never have asked about HPC now start asking how to run complex jobs from the command line. They begin to explore what’s possible with HPC,” said Alain van Hoof, HPC Consultant at the TU/e Supercomputing Center. Unlike traditional software reviews, SimOps evaluates platforms according to how effectively they contribute to the operational maturity of engineering organizations. The assessment considers not only compute performance, but also accessibility, self-service, automation, collaboration, reproducibility, operational efficiency, observability, governance, and the ability to simplify day-to-day engineering workflows. The assessment also recognizes that Open OnDemand is not intended to provide every SimOps capability. Advanced engineering data lifecycle management, simulation cost management, enterprise governance, AI lifecycle management, sustainability metrics, and workflow orchestration typically require complementary technologies and organizational processes. The assessment nevertheless concludes that Open OnDemand provides a foundational Engineering Access and Collaboration Platform within a modern Simulation Operations environment. “Simulation Operations is ultimately about enabling engineering organizations to scale simulation as a repeatable operational capability,” said Wolfgang Gentzsch, Executive Director of the SimOps Foundation. “Open OnDemand makes an important contribution to this objective by lowering the barriers to advanced computing and helping organizations turn HPC from a specialized resource into a more accessible everyday engineering capability.” The complete Open OnDemand SimOps assessment is available at https://www.simops.com/simops-software-stack/open-ondemand. About SimOps The SimOps Foundation is an independent, vendor-neutral, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing Simulation Operations (SimOps), the operational discipline for engineering simulation inspired by the principles of DevOps. SimOps develops best practices, workforce capabilities, certified education, and an open Software Stack ecosystem that help engineering organizations identify certified simulation and HPC infrastructure software to automate, optimize, and scale simulation-driven product development across HPC, AI, cloud, and emerging computing platforms.
