Oil spill closes beaches across northern UAE

retained text

The UAE is contending with an oil spill off its shores, the most visible example of the risks of attacks on tankers and a threat to an already fragile tourist season. Beaches are closed across the northern UAE, including in Ras Al Khaimah, where the Wynn Al Marjan Island is set to open next year. In the days before the spill was announced, residents complained of fuel-like odors pervading areas of Dubai and north.
This was not the first oil spill of the war: A tanker ran aground near Oman’s southeastern coast, leaving a slick covering about 6.5 times the land area of Manhattan, and Iran had an oil spill off Qeshm Island near a breeding ground for endangered hawksbill sea turtles, Bloomberg reported.
