Carney 1812 post references British-Canadian forces routing US Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday made a reference to a 1812 U.S.-British battle in which forces from the United Kingdom were victorious. “On this day in 1812,” Carney said in a post on the social platform X that also featured a photo of a small sculpture of what appears to be a British soldier. According to The Canadian Encyclopedia, in the War of 1812, a battle between the British and Americans occurred on Oct. 13 in the community of Queenston in what is now the Canadian province of Ontario, then called Upper Canada. The fight was over a part of what is known as the Niagara escarpment, with the British victorious in the end. At the time, Canada was controlled by the British. The country’s foundation in 1867 came with British support, and Canada still has links to the U.K., with the country’s monarch technically being King Charles III. Carney’s post could represent a subtle jab at the U.S. and its leadership following recent trade tensions between the two countries. In August, Carney removed his negotiators from trade discussions with the U.S., shortly before a round of tariffs from the Trump administration went into effect. Carney then said his country would implement retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. starting in early September. President Trump has also pushed to acquire Canada, a move Carney has rebuffed. In a poll from this summer, over three-quarters of Canadians said they believed their country ending trade negotiations with the U.S. was the correct decision. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
