ARCHITECTURE Gartner rates storage and compute-as-a-service infrastructure vendors There’s a newish Magic Quadrant looking at suppliers of storage and compute as a service, with Everpure coming out top over HPE’s GreenLake. Gartner says this Magic Quadrant for Infrastructure Platform Consumption Services (IPCS) looks at vendors who deliver mission-critical infrastructure, such as storage and compute, on a consumption-based, as-a-service model, managed through the platform vendor’s control plane. IPCS offerings typically include storage as a service (STaaS), and compute as a service (CaaS), and data services like data protection, analytics and databases. These services are delivered with SLA-backed outcomes, leveraging automation and software-defined infrastructure. IPCS enables customers to shift from capital expenditure and in-house management toward a consumption-based operating model. Everpure, HPE, and Huawei are three leaders in this MQ, ranked in that order: Five vendors are tightly packed in the Challengers’ quadrant: Dell, Hitachi Vantara, IBM, Lenovo and NetApp. Fujitsu is the sole niche player and there are no visionaries. Its latest edition has three strategic assumptions: - By 2029, consumption-based storage as a service (STaaS) will replace 50 percent of on-premises enterprise storage and data services infrastructure capital expenditure (capex), an increase from 20 percent in 2026. - By 2029, more than 30 percent of on-premises servers will be provided through a consumption-based, as-a-service solution, up from less than 20 percent in 2026. - By 2029, more than 40 percent of SLA-as-code (SLAaC) data storage platforms will rely on governance agents to arbitrate outcome trade-offs, up from less than 1 percent in 2026. Some of the inclusion criteria are: - Must offer at least one platform-as-a-service offering in one or more of the on-premises infrastructure domains: STaaS and compute as a service (CaaS), - Gartner requires vendors to demonstrate a minimum of $25 million in average annual run-rate (ARR) consumption revenue for products and services to qualify for inclusion, - A minimum of 25 active production customers and installations, utilizing features and capabilities that are all generally available (GA) from 30 June 2026. The first edition of this MQ came out in in 2025 and we - smacks forehead - missed it. HPE led that edition, ahead of Everpure, them named Pure Storage. Huawei did not feature at all, and two vendors; Nile and Join Digital, were subsequently dropped. Clearly Huawei has jumped straight into the 2026 edition’s leaders’ quadrant, and Everpure has overtaken HPE. You can download a copy of the 2026 report, courtesy of HPE, here. Bootnote The “Magic Quadrant” is a 2D space defined by axes labelled “Ability To Execute” and “Completeness of Vision”, and split into four squares tagged “Visionaries” and “Niche Players” at the bottom, and “Challengers” and “Leaders” at the top. The best placed vendors are in the top right Leaders box and with a balance between execution ability and vision completion. The nearer they are to the top right corner of that box the better.
