US stock markets were muted on Friday, ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's much-anticipated Jackson Hole speech amid investor hopes for insights into upcoming monetary policy decisions.
Warsh has faced criticism over sending sometimes confusing signals at press conferences in his tenure so far on inflation and other topics.
At the open, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 42.5 points, or 0.08%, to 53,611.94. The S&P 500 rose 4.2 points, or 0.05%, to 7,735.17, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 25.4 points, or 0.10%, to 26,515.989.
Since 1982, policymakers and prominent economists have gathered in Jackson Hole for the annual gathering.
The event "has traditionally been the venue at which the Chair prepares financial markets with some forward guidance for the path of monetary policy in the period ahead," said Angus Campbell of Nominis.
"The current Fed Chair's explicit aversion to forward guidance leaves a far less certain outcome," he added.
