NIH grant 1T32TR005456-01A1: CTSA Predoctoral T32 Program at Georgetown Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science
Institute: {'code': 'TR', 'abbreviation': 'NCATS', 'name': 'National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences', 'admin_org_id': '12500062', 'admin_funding_url': ''}. PI: DEXTER L LEE. Award: $181747.
Start: 2026-08-07T00:00:00.
Initially funded as a Clinical Translational Science Award Program (CTSA) in 2010, the Georgetown-Howard
Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS) is a unique partnership of Georgetown
University (GU), Howard University (HU), MedStar Health Research Institute, the Washington DC Veterans
Administration Medical Center, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The overall vision of GHUCCTS is to advance
the CTSA research and training missions through the unique capacities of our partnering institutions for developing
new technologies to conduct clinical and translational research and science (CTR/CTS) and by engaging the
populations in our community. The large pool of faculty conducting CTR/CTS throughout GHUCCTS has
facilitated our ability over the past ten years to annually recruit and train an outstanding cohort of 36 predoctoral
students from GU and HU in the skills they need to pursue a future career in CTR. Our 36 TL1 predoctoral alumni
authored 57 papers, 143 abstracts, and 55 successful extramural grants in CTR from the research they
conducted during their 2 years in the program. Our trainees have received 70 research recognition awards for
their abstracts, poster and platform presentations at scientific meetings and have held multiple leadership roles
in the CTSA consortium including the William Schnaper Visiting Scientist program that provides national venues
for CTSA predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows to share their science and network. Our proposed
Translational Biomedical Science (TBS) 2-year training program for predoctoral students who have advanced to
candidacy in the biomedical sciences at GU and HU builds upon the strategies that led to our successful track
record in student CTR and leadership accomplishments and expands upon our training and career development
activities in CTR to encompass CTS, which is the field that generates innovations that overcome longstanding
challenges along the translational research pipeline…to transform the way that research is done, making it faster,
more efficient, and more impactful (NCATS). Our three primary objectives are to: 1) Extend predoctoral training
in CTS to a range of disciplines by expanding recruitment efforts within 12 of our collective GU and HU collages
and schools; 2) Prepare promising GU and HU predoctoral students for future careers as independent
researchers, national leaders, trailblazers, ambassadors and mentors in the emerging field of CTS; and, 3)
Evaluate and conduct continuous quality improvement studies of our TBS predoctoral program to implement and
disseminate evidence-based improvements. Four training slots, the maximum allowable for a Tier G Hub, are
requested per year.document fetched 2026-08-16 06:34
