Govt weighs legal action over WhatsApp usernames feature: Report

The Centre is reviewing WhatsApp's upcoming usernames feature and exploring legal options to regulate or restrict its rollout in India over concerns that it could facilitate impersonation and online fraud, PTI reported, citing government sources. According to the report, the government is assessing whether existing regulations are adequate to address potential misuse of the feature, which will allow users to communicate using usernames instead of phone numbers. Officials are also evaluating whether further intervention may be required before the feature is introduced in the country. If the feature is found to pose significant risks, the government could issue a legal notice to Meta, seeking details on the safeguards built into the feature and the measures taken to prevent impersonation and fraud, the report added. Authorities may also consider steps to block or delay the rollout if the company's response is found to be unsatisfactory. The concerns stem from the possibility that users could create usernames resembling those of government departments, businesses, public figures or brands, making it easier for fraudsters to impersonate legitimate entities and carry out scams. WhatsApp recently introduced usernames in beta, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Meta has said the feature is designed to enhance user privacy and includes safeguards to minimise the risk of impersonation.
