Zed 1.26 Adds Pyrefly, WebAssembly Debugging, and Smarter Variable Inspection
Zed 1.26 ships expandable variable inspection in debugger hovers, built-in Pyrefly for Python, and DWARF debugging for WebAssembly sources in the JS debugger.
- Zed 1.26 adds expandable, keyboard-navigable variable inspection in debugger hovers while paused at breakpoints.
- Pyrefly, Meta's Rust-based Python language server, is now built in and enabled via the language_servers setting.
- The JavaScript debugger supports DWARF, enabling source-level breakpoints and stepping in Rust or C++ compiled to WebAssembly.
- ACP configuration defaults no longer overwrite settings in existing agent conversations when reopened.
- Fixes include Git Panel discarding staged changes, PowerShell env detection, and Mistral Large 4 responses via OpenAI-compatible providers.
- macOS gets Display P3 color space support through the new use_display_p3 setting.
Zed 1.26.2 improves three developer workflows: inspecting nested values while paused, running Pyrefly as a built-in Python language server, and debugging WebAssembly through DWARF data. The stable release also fixes problems across the agent panel, Git operations, wide-gamut rendering, and PowerShell environments.
Debugger hovers grow branches
While execution is paused, Zed’s debugger hover can now display an expandable, keyboard-accessible variable tree. The release notes describe support for opening nested fields directly over an identifier, which reduces trips to the Variables panel when inspecting objects, structs, arrays, or other compound values.
Inline expansion keeps the source location, current expression, and related values in one view. The available data still depends on the active debugger adapter and the debug information produced by the program’s toolchain.
Pyrefly joins the Python stack
Pyrefly, Meta’s Rust-based Python type checker and language server, is now an optional built-in integration. Zed can use it for static type diagnostics and language intelligence without requiring a separate extension.

"Python": {
"language_servers": ["pyrefly", "!pyright"]
}

}
Within language_servers, pyrefly enables the new server and !pyright disables Pyright for Python files. Teams evaluating Python tooling can compare Pyrefly’s latency, diagnostics, and compatibility against their existing configuration on the same codebase.
DWARF unlocks Wasm source debugging
Zed’s JavaScript debugger can now use DWARF information to debug WebAssembly sources, according to the implementation change. Compilers for Rust, C, and C++ can embed DWARF sections that map WebAssembly instructions back to original files and line numbers. Zed can use that mapping for source breakpoints and step-by-step execution.
The workflow requires a Wasm build that emits and preserves DWARF data, plus a runtime and debugger adapter that expose it. Projects meeting those conditions can keep source-level WebAssembly debugging inside the editor.
Agent, Git, and shell fixes
- Agent Client Protocol configuration defaults now apply only to new conversations. Reopened sessions retain their existing settings.
- Agent thinking controls now explain when the selected effort level prevents thinking from being disabled.
- The OpenCode integration now handles replayed DeepSeek reasoning and disabled thinking for Google models more reliably.
- macOS users can enable Display P3 rendering with the use_display_p3 setting for wide-gamut color output.
- Discarding unstaged changes in the Git panel no longer removes staged changes from the same file.
- PowerShell environment-variable detection now works more reliably in local and remote development sessions.
