Abercrombie & Fitch shares surged about 36% on August 26 after the retailer reported strong second-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance. The sharp rally pushed investors to reassess the company's growth outlook. (Sources: TradingView,The Motley Fool) Abercrombie reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.17, well above Wall Street expectations of around $1.98-$1.99. Revenue reached a record $1.27 billion, rising about 5% year over year and marking the company's 15th consecutive quarter of sales growth. The company's two major brands continued to grow in the second quarter. Abercrombie brand sales increased 8%, while Hollister sales rose 2%, with the company also reporting growth across several international markets. Abercrombie received roughly $100 million in tariff refunds during the quarter, providing a significant boost to earnings. The benefit contributed about $1.75 per share, although the underlying business also performed better than analysts had expected. Management significantly raised its full-year outlook, now expecting sales to grow 5%, compared with its previous forecast of 3%-5%. Adjusted EPS guidance was lifted to $13.10-$13.60 from $10.20-$11.00, while the expected operating margin was raised to 14.5%-15%. Jefferies raised its price target on ANF to $175 from $135 while maintaining a Buy rating. The new target implied about 18% additional upside based on the stock's previous closing price, with the brokerage pointing to stronger full-price sales and improving August trends. Abercrombie has been aggressively buying back its own shares, repurchasing about 7% of its outstanding stock during 2026. The company spent roughly $282 million on buybacks during the first half and plans to repurchase at least $500 million of stock this year. The company's partnership with Target is creating another growth channel for Hollister, including wholesale opportunities and home-and-decor products. Management has indicated that the partnership has performed ahead of expectations, potentially creating another source of future revenue growth. Investors will now focus on whether the strong August sales trends can continue after the earnings-driven rally. Hollister's performance, consumer spending, tariff-related benefits and the sustainability of the company's improved margins will also remain key factors. ANF's surge reflects more than a single-quarter earnings beat. Strong brand performance, higher guidance, aggressive buybacks and new partnerships have strengthened the company's growth story, while Jefferies' $175 target indicates that some analysts still see further upside after the sharp rally.
