America Movil’s chief executive officer Daniel Hajj said the company does not yet know what Televisa’s strategy will be once the transaction is completed but noted that Televisa will be a strong competitor In sum – what to know Pay-TV opening – América Móvil CEO Daniel Hajj said he expects the acquisition of AT&T Mexico by Televisa to allow América Móvil to offer pay-TV services as well. Televisa competition – Hajj expects Televisa to remain a strong competitor after acquiring AT&T Mexico, although América Móvil does not yet know its strategy. Network response – América Móvil plans to maintain investment, 5G coverage, network quality, customer care, employee training and distribution as competition evolves. América Móvil expects the planned acquisition of AT&T Mexico by Grupo Televisa to open the door for the Mexican telecom operator to offer pay-TV services, according to the former’s chief executive officer Daniel Hajj. Speaking during América Móvil’s latest conference call, Hajj said that if the transaction results in Televisa having a full portfolio of telecommunications services, he expects América Móvil to receive the same opportunity. “Hope that the government also allows us to offer all those services. I think they should do it. There is no reason for that not to be like that,” Hajj said. América Móvil has historically faced restrictions on offering pay-TV services in Mexico as the country’s preponderant economic agent in telecommunications. The company has sought to offer pay TV through Claro TV. Hajj’s comments came as analysts asked about the competitive implications of Televisa’s planned acquisition of AT&T Mexico. Televisa’s planned acquisition of AT&T Mexico was announced by AT&T on October 13, when the U.S. operator said it had agreed to sell AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash at closing, subject to certain adjustments, plus additional contractual and contingent benefits. AT&T had said the sale of AT&T Mexico would sharpen its focus and capital allocation on building its U.S. fiber and 5G networks. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions, including any necessary regulatory approvals in Mexico. Televisa already offers a combination of telecommunications and pay-TV services in Mexico. Its Izzi business provides fixed and mobile telephony and internet services, while Sky provides pay TV. During the conference call, Hajj said América Móvil does not yet know what Televisa’s strategy will be once the transaction is completed. “We don’t know exactly what they are going to do, what they are going to change or what’s going to be their strategy. Let’s see what’s going to happen when they take the operation of the company,” Hajj said. He nevertheless expects Televisa to become a strong competitor. “AT&T was a strong competitor and I’m sure that Televisa is going to be also a strong competitor.” América Móvil therefore plans to maintain its focus on the areas it has been investing in. We need to have the best network, good investments, 5G coverage, a good-quality.” Hajj also highlighted América Móvil’s customer-care operation and distribution network. The company has “almost 700 customer care centers,” he said, adding that América Móvil needs to continue taking care of its customers.
