Pixxel deepens US push with dedicated federal subsidiary
Pixxel Federal will build on its existing enagements with NASA and the National Reconnaissance Office, as the Bengaluru-based company seeks to expands its satellite intelligence, advanced sensing and software business with American government agencies.
Bengaluru-based spacetech startup Pixxel has established Pixxel Federal, a US subsidiary aimed at expanding its business with American civilian, defence and intelligence agencies.
The move reflects the growing role of privately operated satellites in government operations, from national security and resource mapping to environmental monitoring. It also signals Pixxel’s ambition to move beyond supplying specialised satellite imagery towards offering a broader combination of sensing technologies, software, and satellite systems.
The subsidiary will build on the company’s existing engagements with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
“The US government market represents a significant opportunity for Pixxel as we expand our capabilities beyond hyperspectral imaging into advanced sensing technologies, software, and satellite systems,” said Pixxel's founder and CEO Awais Ahmed, adding that the new unit will enable it to work more closely with federal agencies, understand their mission requirements, and deliver solutions tailored to their needs.
A key part of the company’s offering is hyperspectral imaging, a technology that captures reflected light across hundreds of narrow wavelength bands, including those beyond the visible spectrum. Different materials absorb and reflect light differently, producing identifiable patterns known as spectral signatures. These can help distinguish minerals, vegetation, and other materials in ways that conventional satellite imagery may not.
The US Geological Survey uses hyperspectral surveys to identify minerals, soils and vegetation, illustrating the technology’s potential in resource exploration and environmental research.
Pixxels sees applications in defence and intelligence, including camouflage detection, terrain assessment, and identification of activities of interest. Other potential uses include locating critical minerals and rare earth elements, monitoring crops, and tracking environmental changes.
Allyson Jenkins, who previously led Pixxel’s public-sector business, has been appointed the CEO of Pixxel Federal. The subsidiary’s board includes retired US Army Lieutenant General Ray Palumbo, former Northrop Grumman executive Patrick M. Antkowiak, and former senior intelligence official Frank X. Avila.
Pixxel also plans to establish an office in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.
The company’s government relationships have developed over the past two years. In September 2024, Pixxel was selected for NASA’s Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Programme, a multi-provider arrangement through which the agency purchases commercial Earth-observation data. In May 2026, the NRO named Pixxel, alongside EarthDaily and ICEYE under its Strategic Commercial Enhancements initiative to expand access to commercial sensing capabilities.
The wider industry is moving in the same direction. US policy has long encouraged government agencies to use commercial remote-sensing capabilities where practical, while retaining national-security safeguards. More recently, the Department of Defense and US Space Force have outlined strategies to integrate commercial space services into national security operations.
