Secret Service closes road near White House due to suspicious package The U.S. Secret Service and D.C. police are investigating reports of a “suspicious item” near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which resulted in a road closure. “Around 2:40 p.m., on October 23, 2026, Secret Service Police were notified of a suspicious item near 17th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue,” according to a statement from a Secret Service spokesperson to The Hill’s partner network NewsNation. Out of an “abundance of caution,” the roads were closed in the area, the statement said. The Metropolitan Police Department and other partners responded to the scene, according to the statement. It is an ongoing investigation. The Embassy of Ireland, located in the same area, said it is “currently closed due to an ongoing security incident in the area, which has resulted in a number of street closures,” in a post on social platform X. “Citizens in the area should heed the advice of local authorities,” the post said. Earlier today in a similar incident, authorities investigated reports of a suspicious package near the Ukrainian Embassy. The embassy was evacuated before it reopened later as the item was deemed not harmful. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc. All rights reserved.
