There are no more sunsets after 7 p.m. for these cities starting this week
(NEXSTAR) – Days are getting shorter in September, and many of us are about to see a major, albeit sad, benchmark associated with that: our final 7 p.m. sunset of the year.
Within the last few weeks, we’ve seen the final post-8 p.m. sunsets of 2026. The sun will not set after 8 p.m. again until at least late March.
Meanwhile, seven of the more than 60 cities analyzed by Nexstar have already seen sunsets shift to the 6 o’clock hour, with roughly a dozen about to experience the same trend.
Honolulu hasn’t seen the sun set after 7 p.m. since mid-August, but that’s largely attributed to the state’s observance of year-round standard time. For those with clocks set to daylight saving time, the first to lose 7 p.m. sunsets were Panama City, Florida, and Las Vegas, according to data from NOAA.
Among those set to have their final post-7 p.m. sunsets this week are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and New Orleans.
In most cases, the sun won’t set after 7 p.m. until daylight saving time begins in March – at least for now (more on this in a moment).
The interactive table below shows when more than 60 cities will see their final 7 p.m. sunsets, and when they’ll see their first in 2027.
It is possible that these cities will see 7 p.m. sunsets again before March, despite the calculations.
The Senate, on recess until Monday, still has a bill up for consideration that would make daylight saving time permanent. The bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, has already passed in the House and received President Trump’s support.
If the bill were to quickly pass through the Senate, it’s possible that our clocks would not fall back in November. Under that scenario, we would see 7 p.m. sunsets return much faster.
Take Austin, for example. After its final post-7 p.m. sunset in mid-October, the Texas city won’t see such a late sunset until daylight saving time begins in March. If our clocks locked on permanent daylight saving time, Austin’s first sunset after 7 p.m. would happen in late January, roughly two months earlier than currently planned.
Nearly 40 other cities analyzed by Nexstar would also see their first sunset after 7 p.m. prior to the currently scheduled resumption of daylight saving time.
For now, though, our clocks aren’t locking on daylight saving time.
It’s difficult to say whether the Senate will take up the Sunshine Protection Act or if it has enough votes to pass and make daylight saving time permanent. Unless they act quickly, our clocks will “fall back” to standard time on November 1, the earliest possible date daylight saving time can end.
