India’s startup ecosystem is entering a potential golden age, driven by a growing pool of experienced founders, innovation across sectors, increasing global ambitions, deeper capital markets and government support, according to The Lift-Off Nation: Why We Are Entering the Golden Age of Indian Startups, a new book by Rajan Anandan and Saurabh Srivastava. Published by Juggernaut Books, the book argues that India’s startups, with a combined valuation of more than $400 billion, have achieved in roughly a decade what the country’s IT services industry took 35 years to accomplish in building a $325 billion sector. The book draws on more than 180 interviews with founders, CEOs, investors, policymakers and academics to examine the factors shaping India’s startup ecosystem and its potential to become a global innovation hub. Anandan is managing director at Peak XV Partners and former head of Google India and Southeast Asia, while Srivastava is a co-founder of NASSCOM, TiE and the Indian Angel Network. The authors identify five factors that they believe are creating opportunities for Indian entrepreneurship. The first is the emergence of experienced founders. Early Indian startups such as Flipkart, InMobi and Zoho have served as training grounds for talent, helping employees develop the skills needed to build and scale businesses. The second is the expansion of innovation across sectors. The third factor is the growing global ambition of Indian startups, followed by the availability of venture capital and access to public markets. The fifth is the government’s role in enabling entrepreneurship. Regulatory reforms and digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), have helped businesses establish and scale operations. The book notes that India has more than 400 space-tech startups, six years after the sector was opened to private participation in 2020. India spends approximately 0.65% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on research and development (R&D), compared with 2.6% in China and 3.5% in the US, according to figures cited in the book. The authors argue that India needs to raise R&D expenditure to at least 3% of GDP to compete in technology-intensive industries and build globally competitive businesses driven by innovation.
