Shelton beats Alcaraz in late-night 'war' to reach semis - Published Carlos Alcaraz's US Open title defence came to an end in a dramatic five-set quarter-final loss to Ben Shelton which ended at 03:34 local time - the latest finish in the tournament's history. A large crowd remained captivated deep into the night as a modern classic unfolded over an unpredictable four hours and 28 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match did not begin until about 11pm in New York, after the start of the night session was delayed by Tuesday's earlier matches. At its conclusion, eighth seed Shelton basked in a standing ovation from a delirious audience after completing a 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6 (10-7) victory that will live long in the memory of all those present. "That was a war, an epic match, so physical," Shelton said. "Carlos is one of the greatest champions in our sport already at 23 years old. "It's ridiculous some of the stuff he comes up with sometimes - the most enjoyable match that I've had in my career, for sure." This was the biggest - and certainly most significant - win of Shelton's career. He had not beaten a top-three player in 17 attempts, and had lost each of his three previous matches against Spain's Alcaraz. It also boosted home hopes of a first American men's singles champion in New York for 23 years. Shelton was less than a year old when Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003 - but an American finalist is guaranteed when he and Frances Tiafoe meet in Friday's semi-finals. World number three Alcaraz was competing at his first tournament since a lengthy injury lay-off, but that is to take nothing away from Shelton, who produced a phenomenal performance. Seven-time major winner Alcaraz had exceeded expectations on his return after more than four months out with a wrist injury, including sweeping past 20th seed Tommy Paul to reach the last eight. But the 23-year-old's lack of match fitness appeared to finally catch up with him in a high-octane encounter filled with breathless exchanges and astounding displays of athleticism. Even when it appeared Alcaraz had emptied the tank, the two-time winner not only forced a deciding set but would go the distance as the players engaged in a tense 10-point match tie-break that provided a fitting conclusion to the contest. "It was close. So I'm just not going to be disappointed about not getting the win at the end," said Alcaraz. "I'm just proud about myself, about how I fought. I leave the court with a smile, healthy, and this is what I needed." Shelton achieves seismic win While home hope Shelton had the vast support of the hardy crowd, Alcaraz has always felt at home at Flushing Meadows. The Spaniard had won 28 of his 31 matches at the tournament - the highest win rate at the US Open in the sport's professional era at above 90% - and last year became the first man to reach the final without dropping a set since Roger Federer in 2015. The Australian Open champion was also on an 18-match unbeaten streak at Grand Slam tournaments, having missed the French Open and Wimbledon with injury, and was seeking to reach his fourth New York semi-final in five years. Regardless of his opponent's current levels, for Shelton this was a victory that could prove seismic in front of a home crowd who passionately backed him throughout. "It is incredible, I always say that this is the greatest stadium in the world," the 23-year-old said. "I'm just hoping my best friend and sister don't have to be at work at 6am. It would be huge from their employers to let them have the day off." The American number one is through to his third major semi-final, having lost to two of the game's heavyweights in Jannik Sinner at last year's Australian Open and Novak Djokovic in New York three years ago. Both went on to be crowned champions. After ousting Alcaraz, Shelton is now the second-highest ranked player remaining in the draw after world number two Alexander Zverev. It remains to be seen how Shelton will recover for the semi-final against Tiafoe, who completed a remarkable comeback from two sets and a break down to beat compatriot Alex Michelsen. "For me, it's always about the people in the crowd - whether it's my coaches and my team, all of my family and friends," Shelton said. Alcaraz edged the opener on a tie-break - but only after surrendering his advantage after breaking for a seemingly decisive 6-5 lead. Shelton, however, was ruthless as Alcaraz's level dropped sharply and embarked on a run of nine unanswered games to claim the second set and take charge of the third. Refusing to fold, Alcaraz launched his fourth-set revival by saving two break points and then breaking when Shelton missed a backhand. Alcaraz appeared to be sick into his towel during a changeover, such was his level of physical exertion, but would break Shelton a second time as he earned a fifth set as the time approached 02:30. Both players failed to take break-point opportunities before a match-deciding breaker swung back and forth. Shelton led 3-1 and Alcaraz regained control at 5-3. But the Spaniard's uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors - the second seed made 53 overall - ultimately cost him, as Shelton captured five of the next six points before seeing out victory in style with an ace. 'An opponent has to take advantage - and Shelton did' The first sign that all was not well with Alcaraz came at the end of the first set. His forehand was off, and his serve erratic. Some of the rallies were stunning, but he was playing carelessly at times, and sometimes seemed disengaged as his concentration fluctuated. All of which can be expected of someone who was playing just his fifth singles match since April and a first against a top-10 player. But the opponent has to take advantage - and Shelton did so superbly. Shelton has previously had a miserable record against the very best, losing all 17 of his previous matches against top-three players. The flashy left-hander played plenty of shots and sent down one serve at 149mph, but was excellent on return and disciplined in defence. By the fourth and fifth sets, Alcaraz was locked in again but could not prevent Shelton closing out the win of his life. Related topics - Published28 August
