Ciganda's late sparkle lifts Europe on dramatic opening day of Solheim Cup - Published Carlota Ciganda once again stole the show after Europe's top pairing of Charley Hull and Lottie Woad failed to ignite against the USA on the opening day of the Solheim Cup. The 36-year-old Spaniard - the oldest player competing this weekend - let out a roar after holing a 15-foot putt to earn Europe an unlikely half point in the final fourball match of the day and ensure honours are even at 4-4. Ciganda's celebration evoked memories of the nerve-shredding finale at Finca Cortesin in 2023, when her putt allowed Europe to retain the trophy with a 14-14 tie. And once again Nelly Korda, beaten by Ciganda in Spain three years ago, was on the receiving end. The world number one and her playing partner Lauren Coughlin both left match-winning putts short to allow Ciganda, who had crucially won the 16th hole with an eagle, to deliver a stunning reprieve for Anna Nordqvist's team at Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands. "I love this week. I just love playing for the team, for my team-mates. We fought hard and we got half a point, which is important," said Ciganda, who is playing in her eighth Solheim Cup. "It gives us big momentum and hopefully we can take that into and win both [of Saturday's] morning and afternoon sessions." European hopes of parity had begun to fade into the shadows of the evening sunshine, with Angela Stanford's visitors seemingly assuming control of the 20th edition of the biggest team competition in women's golf. It proved to be a hard-fought opening day between Europe and a US team looking to retain the trophy following their 15½-12½ victory in Virginia two years ago. However, despite Ciganda's heroics, there was also a sense of what might have been for the hosts, who found themselves 6-2 behind at this stage two years ago at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. History has shown a good start to be essential in this competition, with the team holding the advantage after the opening day taking home the trophy 14 out of 19 times. And the decision to send out Hull and Woad first in both the morning foursomes and the afternoon fourballs failed to deliver the impetus Europe's captain Nordqvist would have hoped for. When Hull and rookie Woad emerged on the raucous opening tee with daylight barely breaking through at 06:40 BST, they did so as the two highest-ranked players in the European side at eight and seven respectively. Yet despite winning the opening hole, Nordqvist's gamble never looked like paying off against the formidable pairing of Korda and Allisen Corpuz. The American duo won all four of their foursomes matches across the previous two editions of this contest and became the first to make it five on the spin with a comfortable 4&3 victory. Disappointingly for Europe, Hull and Woad then let a three-hole advantage slip on the back nine on Friday afternoon against Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin, who was playing only her third competitive round since June. They did at least scramble a half point despite loud music being played by an on-course DJ clearly distracting Woad and Noh as they lined up their final putts. BBC Sport has contacted the Ladies European Tour about the incident which clouded the end of a pulsating match. In contrast Europe's three other debutants, Julia Lopez Ramirez, Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud, delivered in style. England's Rhodes and France's Nadaud produced a superb performance to defeat Corpuz and Auston Kim 2&1, while the big-hitting Lopez Ramirez teamed up with her compatriot Ciganda in that final match against Korda and Lauren Coughlin. "There's another 36 holes [on Saturday], so not every player's going to play five matches," said Nordqvist of her plans. "Sometimes you've got to sit out someone, and for me, it was important to play all 12 players [on Friday], and the way the pairings worked out, that's how I had to play it." US take and trade 'blows' with Europe During the build-up Nordqvist and Stanford both spoke of using the Solheim Cup as an advertisement for women's golf. And the levels of skill, drama and grit on display only served to underline those comments, with the American players also poignantly wearing custom pins to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. "I just told them that I was proud of them again," said Stanford after the conclusion of play. "We took a big swing from them. When you send Charley and Lottie out first, both sessions, we took some of their best body blows today. "I'm excited because I feel like we're a heavyweight fighter. We fight with our mentality and we're just going to see how long we can last, and I feel pretty good about how long we can go." Korda in particular set the tone early on Friday with her fifth win with Corpuz, equalling the points record for pairings set by Europe's Alison Nicholas and Laura Davies. The US pairing of Alison Lee and Coughlin were always in control against Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier, taking their foursomes match 3&2 as the US opened a 2-0 lead. An out of sorts Koerstz Madsen, who talked to her coach between sessions about her swing, and Boutier were also later on the end of a 5&3 demolition in an encounter that marked Megan Khang's sixth consecutive win in Solheim matches and her eighth in the past nine - this time alongside the metronomic Alison Lee. Europe's fightback in the opening session was initiated by Swedish duo Maja Stark and Linn Grant who defeated Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2. Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit followed that up by holding their nerve to defeat Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan in another match that went down the 18th. The victory meant Maguire improved her career Solheim Cup record to nine wins, three defeats and one halved match, to give her the highest winning percentage o any European player that has played five matches. On Saturday, eight more points will be available across the foursomes (alternate shot) and fourballs formats, before the singles on Sunday, which will involve all 12 players on each team. Europe require 14½ points to regain the cup, while US need 14 points to retain it.
