Cheaper cars are selling considerably faster than at the beginning of the year

Consumers are concerned about rising fuel prices and affordability — and that could be showing up in how fast the least expensive cars are moving off dealer lots.
From the first quarter to the third, the number of days it took a dealer to sell a vehicle priced between $20,000 and $29,999 dropped 20%, according to data from Edmunds. That pace of selling saw the biggest acceleration of any price segment.
Vehicles priced from $30,000 to $39,999 sold about 18% faster, and the number of days it took to sell the next tier — $40,000 to $49,999 — dropped nearly 12%, according to Edmunds.
All of those price segments also took fewer days to turn than their more expensive counterparts. The lower-priced tiers took under 60 days to move off lots, with the least expensive ones selling the fastest. Every segment of vehicles above $50,000, meanwhile, took more than 60 days to sell.
"If you're a dealer and you have inventory and that price point, you're definitely noticing," said Edmunds Director of Insights Ivan Drury.
Cheaper vehicles may be selling faster, but they're still hard to find. The average listing price for a new vehicle in September was $49,726, according to Cox Automotive.
And, the overall sales numbers for some key segments priced under $40,000 have fallen. This has especially been true for compact cars, which are down roughly 4% since the beginning of 2026, and compact SUVs, down nearly 8% in the same period, according to Cox Automotive.
These different data points seem to be moving in opposite directions. On the one hand, cheaper cars are moving faster off dealer lots. On the other, sales of affordable segments are down.
There are a few reasons for this, according to analysts who follow the industry. One is that there might not be enough lower-priced vehicles on dealer lots in the first place.
"I think there are some supply things going on at that end of the market," said Cox Automotive Deputy Chief Economist Mark Strand. "We have to kind of grade the market on a curve until we see what's going on with fourth-quarter data."
The compact SUV segment, in particular, is suffering from the lack of two popular models.
The Toyota RAV4, which is the most popular SUV in the U.S., has been in short supply at many dealerships this year, as the automaker shifts production to its Kentucky factory, Strand said. The company also has shifted the entire lineup to a hybrid powertrain at a time when hybrids have been in exceptionally high demand.
The other missing SUV is the Ford Escape, which that automaker discontinued to make way for its upcoming midsize EV pickup truck.
The other slow-selling, low-priced segment — compact cars — faces structural inventory challenges, said AutoForecast Solutions Vice President of Global Forecasting Sam Fiorani.
"We've seen the disappearance of affordable, compact new vehicles over the last decade," he said.
Detroit automakers swapped out their lineups of compact coupes and sedans in favor of small crossover SUVs, which tend to carry slightly higher sticker prices than comparably sized passenger cars.
Currently, there is not a single compact passenger sedan for sale by an American manufacturer. Most on the market are Japanese or Korean, with a few German models, such as the Volkswagen Jetta and the Golf hatchback.
"You have all these brands that have just abandoned the marketplace," Fiorani said.
The smallest American passenger cars are the Ford Mustang, General Motors' Chevrolet Corvette, and the midsize Tesla Model 3 sedan, according to AutoForecast Solutions. The firm classifies both the Mustang and the Corvette as sports cars, and as such they occupy a different niche than compact sedans like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.
The Mustang has a starting price of $33,490, the Model 3 starts at $34,990 and the Chevrolet Corvette starts at $71,300. Cars like the Civic, Corolla and Jetta, meanwhile, all start below $25,000.
"Compact vehicle buyers are very price-sensitive," Fiorani said. "And so when the price of gas goes up, that eats into their car payment. That means that they can't afford a $500 or $600 a month car payment, and they have to move into the used market."
Indeed, the wholesale used prices of compact cars have risen and are up more than almost any other segment, according to Cox Automotive. Wholesale prices — the prices vehicles sell for at large auctions, like Cox Automotive's Manheim auction — are indicators for prices overall in the fragmented used-car market.
Along with the rise in prices, auto finance stats show that a historically high number of buyers are stretching to afford cars.
Roughly one in four buyers financing their purchases are getting 84-month loans — a record. Nearly 3 in 10 trade-ins toward new-vehicle purchases carried negative equity in the third quarter, meaning the cars being traded in were worth less than the outstanding balances of the loans on them. Shoppers are often rolling these negative balances into new loans, which pushes up the new payment cost.
Automakers have also been more tightly aligning production with demand to avoid discounting vehicles. Incentives on average are about 6.6% of the average transaction price as of October, according to Cox Automotive. Leasing offers a way to get a car with a lower payment, but leasing rates are also down.
Vehicle trade-in data suggests that many buyers who are snapping up those fast-selling cheaper vehicles are either first-time buyers or are purchasing supplemental vehicles, Edmunds' Drury said.
The subcompact SUV segment is one lower-priced group that has seen sales rise in 2026. That is a segment that attracts a lot of first-time buyers. But this is still a relatively small share of the total car market, Fiorani said.
"It's not the mainstream vehicle that Americans want," he said. "It is the vehicle that entry-level buyers need to get to work, to get to school. ... It's people who don't have families yet."
Repeat buyers are less likely to want to step down into a compact car or SUV, Drury said.
"The moment you get into that other vehicle and it's a little bit smaller, it's not as comfortable, it doesn't fit all your stuff, all your kid's equipment for soccer practice, you're done," he said. "You're not giving up 360 cameras, ventilated seats, heated steering wheels, these niceties that you've become accustomed to. Automakers know that too. Dealers know that."
The truly cash-strapped are either snapping up the relatively few low-priced cars on dealer lots, moving to the used market, or holding on to their cars longer.
"The people who are trying to buy the smaller vehicles are really hurt by the way the economy is at the moment," Fiorani said. "So those people are trying to move into used vehicles or trying to maintain their current vehicle as long as they can. Automakers should be prepared for a softening in the marketplace."
