A data center development could be coming to Glasgow, Scotland. The Glasgow Bell reports that a local automotive company is potentially looking to develop a data center in the north of the city. Citing documents sent to the local council planning department and seen by the publication, the Bell reports that Allied Vehicles is exploring the possibility of building a data center on land along Carlisle Street opposite Cowlairs Park. Full details haven’t been shared, but Allied is said to be looking to develop on 11 acres, with the proposed development ranging from 20MW to 100MW, depending on the final building design. The plans are reportedly in the pre-application stage and are not yet finalized. The site forms part of what was once the Cowlairs Railway Works, which closed in 1968. Allied Vehicles recently brought the land back into use and now uses some of it as a vehicle refurbishment center. Most of the former site of the main Cowlairs works was converted into the Carlisle Street Business Park and Cowlairs Industrial Estate. A Glasgow city council spokesperson told the Bell the council doesn’t comment on “pre-application discussions on specific proposals as these are confidential or commercially confidential.” Founded in 1993, Allied Vehicles is a supplier of adapted and special purpose vehicles, including taxis, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, minibusses, and more. The company is majority owned by its founder, Gerry Facenna. DCD has reached out to Allied Vehicles for comment. Scotland has a modest data center market, with DataVita’s site outside Glasgow in Chapelhall currently the largest campus in the country. The company also operates a smaller facility in the city, with the likes of Iomart and Asanti also present in the area. However, a number of large-scale developments have now been proposed across the country, totaling gigawatts of capacity. Scotland's parliament has, however, recently backed a de facto temporary moratorium on new hyperscale data centers.
