The US Treasury secretary will hold talks with a top Chinese official as part of efforts to head off a resumption of trade conflict, while tensions mounted between the superpowers across a range of issues. The talks on Sunday come ahead of next week’s leaders’ summit in Washington, DC; though the rhetoric between the White House and Beijing has been largely conciliatory in recent weeks, the reality has been harsher. Along with pressuring major trading partners to curb commercial ties with China and mulling further tariffs on Chinese imports, the US has linked Chinese satellite imagery to an Iranian strike that killed American troops, and tested a space-based weapon that Beijing has warned will fuel an arms race.
