An electric dystopia

Ply, by Hernan Diaz.
The Pulitzer Prize-winner’s new science fiction novel is set in a dystopian New York City where companies have established a monopoly over electricity. Ply’s protagonist is a young woman who works as a “pincher,” someone who makes a living stealing back energy from the privatized grid to power the “bricks” that many pockets of the city run on.
With “layers of rhetorical gambits,” Kirkus Reviews wrote, the book is a “brainy, challenging, and engrossing trek into a battered but unbeaten future.” Buy Ply from your local bookstore.
