Binance said it had worked with industry partners to freeze the affected assets, with approximately $3 billion located so far. The company has not provided an update on the remaining $3.3 billion. Binance co-founder Yi He said the company would cover all losses resulting from the hacking incident. The breach adds to a growing list of high-profile cryptocurrency thefts that have exposed vulnerabilities in digital asset platforms, blockchain networks and decentralised finance (DeFi) services. These incidents have raised questions about the industry's ability to safeguard customer funds and could prompt investors to reassess the risks associated with digital assets. Reuters has documented several major cryptocurrency thefts since Bitcoin emerged in 2008, with some incidents resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses and significant consequences for affected platforms and their customers. The stolen assets were taken from a cold wallet used to store ether tokens. Cold wallets are generally kept offline and are considered more secure than online storage systems, commonly known as hot wallets. The incident highlighted the fact that offline storage alone cannot eliminate security risks, particularly when cryptocurrency platforms manage large quantities of digital assets and interact with external systems. Ronin Network Loses Approximately $540 Million In March 2022, the Ronin Network, a blockchain platform that facilitates transfers of cryptocurrency between different blockchains, suffered a theft worth roughly $540 million. According to Reuters' account of major cryptocurrency hacks, the network, which was linked to the popular online game Axie Infinity, lost approximately 173,600 ether tokens and 25.5 million USD Coin tokens. The incident demonstrated the security challenges facing blockchain networks that support gaming ecosystems and cross-chain cryptocurrency transfers. Such platforms have become important components of the digital asset economy but can expose substantial amounts of funds to security vulnerabilities. Wormhole Hack Results in $320 Million Loss In February 2022, hackers stole approximately $320 million in digital assets from Wormhole, a decentralised finance platform that facilitates transfers between different blockchain networks. Reuters reported that the attackers took 120,000 digital tokens linked to ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. The crypto arm of Chicago-based trading firm Jump Trading, which had acquired the developer behind Wormhole the previous year, subsequently replaced the stolen funds. The incident highlighted the financial risks associated with blockchain bridges, which allow users to move digital assets across different blockchain ecosystems. Vulnerabilities in these systems can expose large amounts of cryptocurrency to theft. Poly Network Hack Exposes DeFi Vulnerabilities In August 2021, Poly Network, a platform facilitating peer-to-peer cryptocurrency transactions, suffered a security breach involving approximately $610 million. As Reuters reported in its coverage of major cryptocurrency thefts, the hackers subsequently returned nearly all the stolen funds. The incident exposed vulnerabilities in the rapidly expanding decentralised finance sector, where users can lend, borrow and save digital tokens without relying on traditional financial intermediaries such as banks. Although the return of the assets limited the ultimate financial impact, the breach highlighted the security challenges facing DeFi platforms as they expand access to financial services through blockchain technology and automated transactions. Coincheck Loses $530 Million in 2018 In January 2018, Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck suffered a theft involving digital assets worth approximately $530 million. According to Reuters, the attackers targeted an online hot wallet, draining the funds and drawing attention to security practices at cryptocurrency exchanges. South Korea's intelligence agency said at the time that a North Korean hacking group might have been responsible for the theft, Reuters reported. The incident underscored the risks associated with storing large quantities of digital assets in internet-connected wallets, which can be more exposed to cyberattacks than offline storage systems. Mt. Gox Collapse Remains a Landmark Crypto Scandal One of the earliest and most consequential cryptocurrency thefts involved Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, where Bitcoin worth close to $500 million was stolen between 2011 and 2014. At its peak, Mt. Gox handled approximately 80% of global Bitcoin trading, making it one of the most influential platforms in the early cryptocurrency market. Reuters reported that Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy in early 2014 after the theft was revealed, leaving approximately 24,000 customers unable to access their funds. The collapse became a defining moment in the history of digital assets, exposing the risks associated with centralised cryptocurrency exchanges and raising concerns about the protection of customer holdings. Crypto Security Remains a Major Investor Concern The succession of major cryptocurrency thefts illustrates the persistent security challenges facing the digital asset industry. Losses have stemmed from vulnerabilities in online wallets, blockchain bridges, decentralised finance platforms and systems used to facilitate transactions across blockchain networks. As highlighted by Reuters' reporting on these incidents, the consequences of cryptocurrency thefts can extend beyond the immediate financial losses to include bankruptcies, lengthy recovery processes and diminished investor confidence. The latest Binance breach adds to these concerns as cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based financial services become more widely used. As the industry expands, investors are likely to pay closer attention to how exchanges store digital assets, manage cybersecurity risks and respond to breaches. Cryptocurrency platforms' ability to protect customer funds and provide transparency after security incidents will remain central to confidence in the sector.
