Global diplomacy takes center stage in New York this week, highlighted by talks between the US and Chinese leaders, even as global conflict looks set to intensify. The UN General Assembly could see US President Donald Trump meet with his Ukrainian, and maybe even Iranian, counterparts, but wars involving both countries show little sign of respite: European nations fear Russia is readying to expand its war in Ukraine, potentially into NATO territory, while Tehran and Washington have once again threatened to resume fighting. The spotlight will, however, be on Trump’s summit with China’s leader: The stakes for the pair’s meeting are huge, but expectations for any broad detente beyond their existing trade truce are low.
