The bigger question is not just where global capital is invested today, but where it could be headed next. Spotting these shifts can help investors tap into new opportunities to earn maximum returns on their investments. That question will set the tone for a keynote conversation at the ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0on October 8 in Mumbai, where Nilesh Shah, Group President & Managing Director, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company (KMAMC), will decode global capital flows and trends that could shape portfolios before they become mainstream. What makes global money move? Economic growth, interest rates, currencies, corporate earnings, valuations and geopolitical developments can all influence where investors put their money. When one market becomes more attractive, global investors may shift allocations. Money can also move between equities, bonds, commodities and private markets as the balance between risk and returns changes. For individual investors, these movements can explain why some markets and themes attract attention while others fall out of favour. Where are big investors looking for opportunities? Large institutions and family offices often invest with a longer horizon, looking beyond short-term moves to structural changes that could play out over several years. Artificial intelligence is one such shift, reshaping businesses and investment across industries. The opportunity may extend beyond AI companies to semiconductors, data centres, power infrastructure and businesses adopting the technology. But spotting a theme is only half the job. Investors must ask whether they are early enough—or whether valuations have already priced in much of the opportunity. Why should Indian investors care about global flows? Global capital does not move in isolation. When investors change their allocation across major markets, the effects can travel quickly to emerging economies such as India. Geopolitical tensions, for instance, can push crude oil prices higher, putting pressure on an import-dependent economy such as India and potentially affecting the rupee and inflation. US Federal Reserve rate moves can also influence global capital flows and foreign investor appetite for Indian equities and bonds. A weaker rupee, higher crude and changing global rates can quickly find their way into domestic markets. Tracking these global shifts can help investors understand the forces shaping Indian markets and emerging investment themes. Can investors spot the next big trend early? By the time an investment theme becomes a mainstream conversation, a significant part of the opportunity may already be reflected in valuations. The challenge is to distinguish a genuine structural shift from a temporary surge in investor enthusiasm. That requires looking beyond the narrative to fundamentals, valuations, earnings potential and risks.
