Featured Story T-Mobile: We'll be first with 6G, and no to SpaceX MVNO T-Mobile reports Q3 earnings and says it aims to be first with 6G in the US. It also continues to rule out an MVNO deal with SpaceX's Starlink. DayOne and Nxera signed their respective MoUs on power supply with Sembcorp to support their data center developments in Asia. DayOne and Nxera have signed their respective memorandums of understanding on power supply with Sembcorp Utilities to support their data center developments in Asia. The separate announcements made this week underscored the mounting pressure on data center operators to provide sufficient energy to support power-hungry AI and cloud workloads. The expansion of data centers across the region is currently hampered by a severe power supply bottleneck, with power grids struggling to keep pace. Industry analysts have predicted that these facilities will consume over 1,000 terawatt hours of electricity by the mid-2030s, up from less than 200 terawatt hours today. As grid development lags behind demand, particularly in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, governments are moving away from open approval to strict mandates regarding energy intensity, water usage and grid sharing. Hyperscalers and data centre operators are shifting their focus away from total reliance on public grids, exploring independent power plants (IPPs), co-located energy generation and direct private renewable setups. Data center developers are also forming partnerships with utility companies to build onsite or dedicated power solutions. At this week's Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) event, Nxera announced that it is collaborating with Sembcorp Industries to supply its data centers in the city state with renewable and low-carbon energy. Nxera is Singtel's data center arm. "AI is driving a step-change in the power needs of data centers, and in a land- and resource-constrained market like Singapore, how we source that power matters," said Bill Chang, CEO of Nxera and Singtel's Digital InfraCo unit. The two companies will explore potential solutions, including low-carbon and hydrogen-based power generation, biomethane-based power generation, the application of photovoltaics to vertical buildings, and the import of renewable energy from the 2.2GWp floating solar project at Linggiu Reservoir in Johor, Malaysia. Nxera noted that these initiatives would help to reduce its carbon footprint as its operations expanded. "Working with Sembcorp gives us more options to power our growth sustainably and responsibly. Strengthening our energy resilience will be critical to underpinning Nxera's long-term development in Singapore while supporting Singapore's digital ambitions," Chang said. Meanwhile DayOne is collaborating with Sembcorp as part of its "Bring Your Own Power" initiative, which integrates power planning into the earliest stages of data center development – identifying and securing suitable energy solutions. This approach aims to reduce risk, navigate increasingly constrained power markets and give customers greater confidence to scale up. The two companies have agreed to evaluate solutions in areas including on-site power infrastructure and generation, the supply of renewable energy, and operations and maintenance services. Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne, said that working with Sembcorp would give them the opportunity to explore integrated data center, power and energy solutions as they continue to expand across the region. "Scaling digital infrastructure means thinking about the energy pathways powering it from the outset," she said. "Our approach is to secure the critical resources – including power, land, water, and connectivity – early, so we can execute with speed while building responsibly for the long term." Under the terms of their agreement, DayOne and Sembcorp will jointly evaluate the feasibility and business case for energy solutions associated with agreed projects, as well as potential implementation pathways. The framework allows the two companies to explore various areas, including reliable and cost-effective power solutions, power generation and electrical infrastructure, fuel supply and storage, renewable energy solutions and related technical and operational services. According to DayOne, its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sembcorp will build on its power and energy initiatives across its footprint, as the company aims to source 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 where market conditions allow. In Singapore, DayOne has a power purchase agreement in place with Sembcorp for its upcoming SG1 data center, which will be powered entirely by renewable energy. In June 2026, the data operator announced renewable energy supply agreements in Malaysia, covering approximately 1.5GWp of solar capacity and 2.2 GWh of battery energy storage under the country's Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). DayOne has also entered into a power purchase agreement to supply renewable energy to its Chonburi Tech Park data centre campus in Thailand. Read more about: Asia
