NIH grant 1K24HL183708-01: IMPACT - Innovative Mentorship and Patient Advancement through Cardiovascular Technology
Institute: {'code': 'HL', 'abbreviation': 'NHLBI', 'name': 'National Heart Lung and Blood Institute', 'admin_org_id': '12500068', 'admin_funding_url': ''}. PI: Fatima Rodriguez. Award: $131048.
Start: 2026-07-10T00:00:00.
This K24 Mid-Career Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (POR) is to support the
mentoring, research, and career development activities of Fatima Rodriguez, MD, MPH. Dr.
Rodriguez is an accomplished clinical researcher and Associate Professor of Medicine at
Stanford University with a strong track record of research productivity and committed mentoring.
Dr. Rodriguez leads an interdisciplinary team focused on developing innovative approaches to for
the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Rodriguez’s mentees can
leverage the existing research platform available through 3 R01s around the use of artificial
intelligence (AI) to improve cardiovascular disease prevention and co-mentorship from
longstanding collaborators with expertise in bioinformatics, qualitative methods, community
partnerships, and implementation science. This K24 will provide crucial protected time to mentor
early-stage POR investigators.
The K24 Mentoring Plan directly aligns with Dr. Rodriguez’s career objective to foster POR using
the latest data science methods and tools. The Mentoring Plan leverages the rich educational,
career development, and research support programs available through Stanford’s Clinical and
Translational Science Award, the Center for Digital Health, and the Cardiovascular Institute. The
new direction of research to be supported through this award focuses on gaining new expertise in
cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome and scientifically rigorous qualitative and co-design
methods in the use of digital tools to enhance patient outcomes.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide yet is largely preventable
with the early identification and treatment of those at risk. Aim 1 will develop a large language
model platform to understand reasons for nonuse of evidence-based cardiovascular-kidneymetabolic therapies. Aim 2 will identify barriers and solutions to the use of digital health tools for
cardiovascular disease prevention through patient and clinician focus groups. Aim 3 will pilot a
digitally enabled cardiovascular disease management program for patients identified as at high
risk through AI opportunistic screening approaches. These aims will support mentorship that
blends traditional research methods in clinical research with training in AI methodologies,
implementation science, and community engagement. This approach will cultivate a new
generation of investigators skilled in tackling important problems in cardiovascular disease
prevention with innovative tools and patient-centered strategies.
The K24 builds on established multidisciplinary partnerships and research infrastructure,
leverages existing cohorts and data, and adds new training to provide effective mentorship to the
next generation of physician-scientists. This proposal is directly responsive to the priorities of
NHLBI to leverage data science tools to improve cardiovascular health and provides the ideal
context for the training of clinician scientists committed to closing longstanding implementation
gaps in cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment.
